Weird to me in the world of NIL a HS prospect not in the first few rounds would opt to not go the college route (assumes they have the academic chops) Get a degree Develop as a player Not go from parents home to being on your own (college players still get taken care of more than MiLB players) Get some NIL money Be a campus hero with all it's perks.. $195K won't last long Well most MLB teams invite negotiating a "education package"... most signed kids will get some or all of their school paid for. With the revamped MiLB system transportation, facilities, housing, nutrition, and medical is far better than before reduction in affiliates. Plus that $195k is far, FAR more than the average NIL. And, it can be socked away. Salaries have also increased dramatically. Rookie level players now get $675/wk with almost no expenses. Minimum salary at Rookie ball is $19,800 in 2024. Plus $30 daily per diem. Also if released, their health insurance continues 90 days after the release date. As mentioned players can still get college courses paid. Ands, like college players take online classes all year long. $200k+ all the extras is super appealing to most who see baseball as their priority. So well said, please post this every time someone doesn't understand why a player might actually want to go the professional route instead of coming to Corvallis.

Best of luck to the young man. College isn't for everyone. I always like to see where players who sign are three years down the road. My guess is Swanson will be in High A, or about the exact some place he'd be if he attends college and develops, gets drafted again in 2027 and misses out on the crappy bus rides, flea-bag hotels, crappy post-game food spreads and playing 140 games in the heat and humidity at some rookie league, low A or High A outpost in the deep south or midwest. I've heard Lakeland, Fla., can be beautiful in July and August. Not usually, no.

The MLB site will list signings and bonus amounts. I'd wait for that listing because if there was ever an above slot signing waiting to happen, Swanson was it. A baseball "friend" of mine estimated his bonus would fall between $400 and $500k. If Detroit signed him for slot, that had to be the steal of the draft. He and Paul Wilson are somewhat comparable and Detroit paid Wilson around $1.3m last year

He's giving up about 2-1/4 baserunners per inning in the FCL. - oofff I guess you could say he gets more batters out than he puts on base.
