Shouldn't we at least have a 24-25 season before claiming the WBB program has been "destroyed?" No. The WBB program was positioned to weather the storm of conference realignment very successfully. It would have been a national power for the next 2 years, and Rueck could have continued his magical recruiting. Next year's team will be a lesser conference good team at best, will not make the NCAA tournament, and you won't see any 4 or 5 star recruits coming here. All the good stuff is gone, and it's not coming back. We'll have a team, and they'll do OK on a much lesser stage. But serious thoughts of Final Fours and top ten rankings - destroyed.

Different world out there. The Oregonian reported 19 of the 23 OSU Softball players are in the Portal. Apparently the main issue is competing in the WCC.

So, Rueck can't rebuild the program to, say, Gonzaga's level? Guess I'll never have to buy tickets again, since you can predict the future so accurately. PS: I think AJ Marotte is "good stuff." Marotte is good stuff, and I think very highly of her as a person. She's a pretty good basketball player, but Beers good, Gardiner good, Hunter good, or Paurova good, she isn't. You can't build a team around AJ. And not only do I not think Rueck can rebuild to Gonzaga level in the next few years, I don't think Gonzaga will be able to maintain that level. We should probably move to Bernice's Den if you want to continue this dialogue.

Main issue competing in the Big Ten? The mass exodus in football and basketball absolutely had to do with the move to the MWC and the WCC. You can blame some on Smith and company leaving in football, but most had to do with the relegation to a weak conference. This is exactly why Canham and company chose to go independent instead. They saw the writing on the wall if they moved to those lesser conferences. Going independent salvages our brand, for now, because we donât appear âweaker than.â Instead, we actually appear elite because there are only a handful of teams who could actually do this and remain relevant. The baseball program gave relegation the big middle finger and chose to pave its own path. I commend them for this. Beaver baseball nation and the players deserve it. Now I will wait for the comments from people who believe we should have gone to a weaker conference because of the âauto bid.â Even though it would have gutted our program and we would never be able to recruit at this level again.

Until it actually happens, you have absolutely no idea if going independent "salvages our brand," whatever that means. You have absolutely no idea whether we can go independent and "remain relevant." For all anyone knows, we might fall flat on our a**es next year. You do not know that joining the MWC or the WCC would have "gutted our program" and our recruiting. San Diego is in the WCC. They seem to have had a fine, fine season. All you listed is conjecture, statements unproveable at the present time. However, I do know for sure that by joining the MWC, WSU will have a shot at an automatic bid next May, no matter how their regular season goes. That's an option we might need but won't have. For us, it's at-large or nothing, we eliminated 50% of our pathways to the NCAA tournament. Other's mileage may vary; in fact it obviously does. No big deal.

Regardless of what you said, anyone and everyone who knows college sports views the WCC and MWC as âless than.â The reason the move to the MWC hasnât greatly impacted football recruiting is because we already previously recruited at the level of those schools. Our recruiting and program basically fit the MWC mold. In baseball, you canât convince me that a move to the WCC wouldnât significantly harm our recruiting and our national image. We are not a WCC baseball program. Sure, San Diego is a decent program, but do you want to settle and recruit at the San Diego level? When was the last time they had a top 25 recruiting class? When did they last host a regional, super regional, or go to Omaha? It sounds elitist, but itâs the way we have to carry ourselves, and itâs the one program we have where we can. If we do fall flat on our face, then we will be relegated to a lesser conference anyway, so why not try to remain elite before having to choose that fate? Lastly, since when do the premier baseball programs in the country rely on auto bids? Our last last six postseason trips did not rely on an auto bid, including our 2018 national championship team.

Lastly, since when do the premier baseball programs in the country rely on auto bids? Our last last six postseason trips did not rely on an auto bid, including our 2018 national championship team. Ah... so no conference is "elite"? Do you think 40+ wins, winning a weaker conference leads to a host spot? With no real knowledge of what type of schedule can actually be built, having no conference lowers your RPI. Even in a weaker Pac12 our opponents opponents were better over the course of 30 conference games. And, maybe consider OSU didn't need an auto because of the Pac12 affiliation, the conference's rep, and what OSU did in conference play. But again, you stated absolutes based on opinion with no factual basis. When confronted with factual info you then justify it with bunch of random comparisons. Former recruiting classes, past success aren't relevant in today's college climate. None will keep OSU "elite"... nor will an independent schedule over a conference affiliation. IF being one of 64 teams in a field of 64 is elite? Cuz that's what it has been since 2018. Then being in a conference, ability to schedule elite NC games vs 56 total games, a conference tourney/win or else scenario, dominating said "weaker" conference has far more up side. Believe what you want. But, independent schedule doesn't make OSU elite. It doesn't keep them elite. In fact if you want to toss around unfounded opinion I'll say OSU baseball is different than every other sport at OSU. Players come here more for the program than playing Pac12 ball. OSU recruits to the program not the conference. But, having a conference, even a weak one, gives players far more recognition amongst their peers. It provides national relevance. It eliminates doubt about how a team would fare in conference play. And, OSU's membership will advance and enhance the conference in year 1. So, will a program like OSU actually be seen negatively because of a conference? I don't believe so. But, one failed independent schedule could have far worse implications. So, your logic of just dropping down then, makes no sense. Why risk it? It's a done deal, so we'll ask be anxious to first see the schedule, then how it plays out.

Do they determine the climate if college sports today? Hmmmm... did those things get OSU a P4 conference invite? So if you live in the past and are an OSU fan... guess you're right. They are relevant to new recruiting and who the program is... as mentioned in the post. But, as most who can read entire threads and posts... Not in determining if an independent schedule or conference affiliation matters. Which of course was the discussion.

Apparently Oregon State doesn't know what it's doing when it comes to the baseball program. Pay no attention to the WBB and VB programs behind the curtain! Nothing to see there. They are just fine going to the WCC. Nobody entered the portal because of that. Remember: Lesser is better!
