I just expect visiting teams in the post season to pitch great on the first night. I think back a couple years ago when Mejia from New Mexico State went toe to toe with Hjerpe. If I recall, there really was no statistical indication he should be sharing the same field as Coop and yet there he was stealing the limelight that night. Mejia 7.1 IP 4 ER Hjerpe 6.2 IP 3 ER Beaver Nation gave Mejia a standing O for his gritty performance after he got the hook. NM St tied game up in 9th and then in the 10th Bazzana scored on a bases loaded walk earned by Boyd. A walk off walk....on a night of mostly stellar pitching. lol Only 4 of 15 baserunners scored. Stranded two in the first after Baz struck out looking on an eight-pitch at bat. Two runners in scoring position with no outs in the second. No runs. The third ended after Logan, inexplicably hitting fifth, hit into a double-play. Two on and no outs in the fourth before Baz was picked off to poison the inning. Forrester was stranded at second in the fifth after a Logan flyout. Strike 'em out, throw 'em out between Dukart and Baz to start the sixth off poorly. Forrester was stranded at third in the seventh after a Logan line out. Dukart walked on six pitches in the eighth, baserunner #15. Incredibly awful clutch offense. Derne was a hole in the lineup. Dukart reached in three of his four plate appearances but was the strikeout in a strike 'em out, throw 'em out in the sixth. Gretler singled in the second and got to second on a wild pitch. But Dukart and Gretler were stranded there as the 9-1 hitters each failed to advance the runners and Meckler failed to reach. Gretler otherwise did nothing. The lineup sucked and looks worse with time. Oregon State actually put more runners on than Mejia had throughout the rest of the season and scored more runs. Mejia's WHIP went from 1.45 to 1.47, and his ERA went from 4.24 to 4.29 after playing Oregon State. Mejia was actually worse than he had been the rest of the season, maybe not enough worse for some people, but Mejia did not overperform. I read through some of the posts from back in 2022 recently, and it was interesting to see several on here badmouth Hjerpe for giving up three. It was apparently wet, because the general response was that Hjerpe would have pitched better, if it were dry. Oregon State still should have won the game, but Ferrer gave up single, groundball to advance the runner, and single to tie the game to start the ninth. Blown save. Dorman left a much better pitcher on the bench in Brown (presumably to save Brown for San Diego) before belatedly calling for Brown to replace Ferrer with the go-ahead runner on first. The runner on first wound up going to third on a bad pickoff play but was stranded there to preserve the tie. Brown did well in the 10th, generating what should have been four outs but for a bad throw by Derne. In the 10th, Trosky pinch hit for Derne, showing that that is not as impossible as Judge Smails seems to think that it is. Trosky drew a walk to load the bases. Boyd then walked to win the game 5-4 in 10.Didn't say anything was impossible, but blaming the coach for a loss where his option was to sub out one bad hitter for another one was no guarantee of a different outcome.

It is almost a guarantee of a different outcome. Whether that outcome would have been positive or negative, I can only say that it seemed to be positive against New Mexico State.

NM St. does not equal Auburn.

Boyd then walked to win the game 5-4 in 10. The last eight pitches were all balls. As a final aside, Mejia is a AA pitcher for the Braves, apparently a little further ahead of Cardinal A+ pitcher, Hjerpe. Did not recall Mejia's numbers being that good, but now that you've shown the numbers I think what I was recalling is NM St not being that good for most of the season. I didn't look it up, so I could be wrong, but I want to say they only got into the postseason due to their conference tournament and were like 4th or worse in conference standings prior. Something that really jumped out at me in your post is that Trosky pinch hit. I was thinking now way, he's a sophomore, he wasn't on the team, but then I realized I had forgotten the lost injury season.

Guarantee... wow. I guess the sub is not capable of striking out? Hitting to the same fielder? Or, just making the same unproductive out?

I guess the sub is not capable of striking out? Hitting to the same fielder? You lose the "argument" once you state you can guarantee an outcome based on changing one circumstance. Not only the individual outcome, yet the outcome of the game itself. Typical of a "black or white fallacy"... declare that there are only two possible outcomes when there are indeed many.

Go back and read his comment, he didn't guarantee any outcome, just that the outcome would be different. Which is of course true, if nothing else because in the score book it would be a different name producing said outcome.

Which is just as false. So, your claim/argument is that a new name qualifies as a new outcome? Yet you actually infer differently above?! Sorry a new name in the scorebook is not a "new" outcome. But, thanks for another example of a logical fallacy.
