As glaring as the bullpen issues are everyone needs to chill. It’s game 2 of a mid-week series and we are missing FOUR of our 5 best hitters. On top of that you’re missing some of your best athletes as well. When you score 10 runs in a baseball game, you should win said game. Had those missing players did play, then yes, the Beavers may have won just by out slugging Nevada. However, giving up 11 runs is not a good look for the pitching staff, and it was only 11 runs due to Lawson pitching like the Lawson of old.

The injuries and bullpen woes are finally catching up to us at precisely the wrong time. This Cal series scare me big time. They are coming off a sweep and desperately need to beat us this weekend. They are better than their pac 12 record indicates. I’m not a big RPI guy, but you can’t lose to teams like Nevada and then to Cal and have a chance at sniffing the top 8. If we want to finish top 8 this weekend is a must win series. We have put ourselves in that scenario with some of our bad losses this year.

This bullpen reminds me very much of 2021. You could never ever trust a lead, no matter how much and how late. On another note, even though we have been scoring runs, our offense is a shell of itself without Baz and McDowell. Not having our two best contact hitters at the top of our lineup hurts. The 2021 bullpen was better than the 2024 bullpen has been. And it should be noted that the 2024 bullpen has statistically been better than 2022 or 2023 bullpens. I think that the 2021 bullpen is derided for how it ended, blowing that five-run lead in the sixth. But that was a gassed bullpen. Hjerpe came out on one days' rest and gave up two runs. Mundt gave up the grand slam but was pitching for the second consecutive day and had also thrown two innings the Friday before. Three appearances in a four day period, the first two each for two innings. Oregon State just ran out of arms.

At the end of the day we needed to win the PAC anyways with how bad RPI is on the west coast. Agree though I don’t feel super confident with this Cal series. That park plays weird as well.

I just remember some bad late losses in 2021, specifically to UCLA, Oregon, and ASU.

I didn't see the game as I was teaching or driving home. But I was very disappointed in the offensive approach in the top of the 9th. We sounded pretty passive. Conversely, Nevada's batter took it straight to us.
A very disappointing loss.

The way it ended was more on that and the lack of trust that was not built. Osu should have had better options ready.

Conversely, Nevada's batter took it straight to us. A very disappointing loss. Couldn’t agree more. Ultimately the loss is on the bullpen being up 4 in the bottom of the 8th. But we got a lead off walk in the 9th and then had back to back K’s against a guy who had only thrown 5 innings all year. Just can’t happen. Not competitive at all. Their competitiveness and aggressiveness won them that game late, and we couldn’t match it.

Nice couple of days for a local kid on the other side. Holder went to CV, his dad is a big Beaver fan. He’s having a great year.

His sidearm/submarine junk fooled people briefly last year, then he was ineffective. Can't remember his last good outing this year. You CANNOT walk the first two batters of an inning with a four-run lead. Unacceptable. His 0.2 against Stanford on Saturday? He picked up the win in 1.1 against Arizona State the Sunday before? His two innings against Gonzaga on Easter Monday? His 0.2 against Utah in the Friday game? His 0.2 against CSUN in the Friday game? His inning to close out Minnesota on Presidents' Day? I was OOT this past weekend, did not see him against Stanford. I'm less than impressed by his overall body of work, and he did us absolutely no favors tonight. And without "inherited runners allowed to score" data, which is unavailable in the rudimentary stats on the website, the effectiveness of relief pitchers is impossible to judge accurately. Other's mileage may vary, of course.
