You think Guerra, Hainline, Trosky, and Smith are all back next year? Hainline and Guerra will go pro unless they think they can get more money with a good senior year (that rarely works out and the player has zero leverage as a senior). Trosky probably back but I also wouldn’t be surprised if he transferred to find a place where he’s an everyday guy. Smith probably back but is he going to want to split time with Webber next year? Or does Webber win that spot outright? Zero percent chance that Guerra or Hainline is back next year, unless literally no MLB team wants them (or unless one or both just love Oregon State more than money, which is rare but happens). Cole Hamilton only started 13 games over two years at catcher, and the Nationals still signed Hamilton. MLB teams love catchers, love them. They love them so much that they tried to turn Gretler and Malone into catchers. (More successful with Malone than Gretler, but neither was great.) The Twins actually had the patience and ability to turn Caleb Hamilton into a catcher after the fact, as well. And Caleb Hamilton has a lifetime .043 batting average in the Bigs, and he still has a job in Rocket City. An actually great defensive catcher like Smith, though? I just cannot see him not getting like a 17th Round selection. MLB teams love great defensive catchers. If he can hit some, even better. |
