Scheduling P4 conference teams on their conference bye week is going to be tough. SEC is out of the question since they are 10 weeks straight and don’t have a bye week. BIG 12 and B1G will want to schedule cupcake series on their bye weeks. Their conference schedules are already grueling enough they won’t want to schedule OSU even if it does look good on the resume for RPI/seeding purposes. The ex PAC 12 teams will probably have some Tuesday/Wednesday week series with the Beavs. The bulk of the schedule during conference play will need to filled with Big West, WCC, Mountain West schools. From an RPI perspective going to need to load up on preseason tourneys. Probably first 3-4 weeks on the road. Have to make sure there are good teams in Suprise. Go back to Texas and probably one other big time tournament like the Frisco Classic. It’s doable but more than likely a lot of away games next year.
Big Ten baseball teams cannot afford to schedule cupcake series on their bye weeks. Oregon State makes a ton of sense for Oregon, UCLA, USC, Washington to play on their bye weeks.
The West Coast Conference may not have byes next year, if Wazzu joins up. (I am still unclear on whether Wazzu will join or not.) That may free up Washington for a bye week series. But it may take the other nine WCC teams off the table.
The WAC should be on the table. Grand Canyon is usually a premier team and not an absolutely terrible place to play in early April let's say. Grand Canyon actually has their bye week this weekend, and is travelling to Moraga to play St. Mary's. Why not Corvallis?
The other conference with an odd number that is somewhat near geographically is Conference USA, which has Dallas Baptist, New Mexico State, and Sam Houston State.
I should also mention that not all of the ACC teams play 10 straight weekends. 10 of the 14 ACC teams play 11-week conference schedules this year. Six ACC teams play a non-conference opponent in the last week of April or first two weeks of May. The reason is because certain ACC teams take time off for Dead Week and/or Finals' Week. This year, those six teams are:
April:
NC State
Pittsburgh
May Week 1:
Miami
Virginia Tech
Wake Forest
May Week 2:
Notre Dame
It is possible that Cal and/or Stanford will have a bye during one of those three weekends next year.
Just looking at byes this year over the final 10 regular season weekends (ignoring the Big 12 and future Big 12 teams), you could have a schedule of top 64 RPI teams, which includes:
Week 1:
Maryland
Week 2:
Nebraska, Ohio State, or Rutgers
Week 3:
Oregon
Week 4:
Sam Houston
Week 5:
Dallas Baptist
Week 6:
UC Irvine
Week 7:
NC State
Week 8:
Miami, Virginia Tech, or Wake Forest
Week 9:
Cal
Week 10:
Lamar
I believe that we can easily put together a great schedule next year, if we are active once the conference schedules start coming out.
