It isn't how I want them playing, but it's a nice ability to have. If I remember correctly, did the 2017 and 2018 teams not have an ability to pull games out of their @$$ when things weren't necessarily going well like we witnessed tonight? Might have been more the 2018 team as the 2017 team beat the doors off pretty much everyone, but seems like both those squads were pretty good ball clubs. 2017 and 2018 Oregon State never overcame a 3+ run ninth inning deficit. 2017 and 2018 Oregon State were experts at avoiding those situations. It is awesome to be able to get out of those situations, when you find yourself in those situations. It is far better, though, to avoid 3+ run ninth inning deficits like the plague.

One of those things that only works with a freak offense or a whole lot of help from the opposing pitcher. Ashman was obviously rattled by Smiths miracle fly followed by Hainline shelling him.

It wasn’t over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor, and it wasn’t over when we were down 3 in the 9th. It’s hard to keep a good team down. Pitchers get a little pucker factor, when trying to close us out.

Ashman did not pitch to Smith. The pop fly double was not off him. His first pitch went over the rf fence.

That first-pitch HR was such a massively cool flex.
Everybody following that game is watching their All-American stud closer warning up and thinking it's over, but not Hainline. He stepped into that batter's box thinking LFG. Maybe the only person in the stadium thinking that way, too.
We can all pour over stats and form opinions through a computer screen, but Hainline showed us something last night about his mental toughness and competitiveness. Now we all see what Mitch saw when he made him our starting shortstop and has continued to stick with him.

After a disastrous first two weeks Hainlines average is at .271 now. Dernedde was .248 in 2023, .216 in 2022 and .290.in 2021.

Pitchers get a little pucker factor, when trying to close us out. Following Smiths double, Hainline and Caraway had the huge RBI hits - but the walks to Krieg and Turley (on a total of 9 pitches from Ashman and Harris) showed that plate discipline by power hitters is incredibly important. Those two walks changed the tie-game situation (for Caraway) from 2 Outs runner on second, to 2 outs bases loaded. The latter I imagine providing far more "pucker" factor for Harris. What shame there's no video. Or is there?

I question Utah's decision to bring in Ashman to face Hainline. Why not wait and have Ashman face Bazzana. It sounded like Ashman had not had a sufficient time to warm up. And Ashman piped his first pitch. Great talent will usually expose bad coaching.
