Thought CSUN was a scrappy bunch offensively. Overall, I thought they were the worst team we’ve played so far. The depth of our position player group is vast but you can definitely tell there’s a difference with how dynamic the lineup is without Kasper (hurt), McDowell (hurt), and Caraway (sick) (yes, I know McDowell was in the lineup but not consistently and they’re still being careful with him). We left 39 players on base and CSUN handed us 26 walks. 3 games were tight contests. Am I crazy to think we move Holmes to the starting rotation until May is fully healthy? However, that really takes away from the bullpen. I think once we get Palmer back that will be a huge addition. We need to get healthy for conference play.

CSUN >>>>>> North Dakota State and I don't think it's close. They better than Bakersfield too.
No, Holmes doesn't start, no chance. A sidewinder that relies on a slider is perfect from the pen so that opponent doesn't seem them more than once.
Palmer won't make a big difference this year but would be amazing if he does. Just hope he gets his chance to throw some but unless it's late it's pretty unlikely he's a diffence maker after throwing first pitches of season in April best case

I came to the opposite conclusion about needing to get healthy before conference play, at least in terms of field play and batting. Some of the fill-in players have made a strong case for starting. I don't think we have to worry about having a guy out for a spell.
I also came to the opposite conclusion about CSUN, but, hey, I wasn't at the games.

Kreig almost has to be the full time DH at this point.

Kreig almost has to be the full time DH at this point. I've really liked his play at 1B, feels to me he should play 2 of 3 games there and rotate others guys through DH potentially and let Guerra move around to where he's needed or take a DH day himself. But saying the same thing that he needs to remain in lineup

I think Krieg, and Guerra need to be in the lineup. Guerra made a really nice catch down the line in left.
I thought CSUN was overall better than NDSU. They can hit the ball, and credit to their staff......I thought Sunday would get out of hand for them. Instead, they almost caught us!

It looks like Krieg is better at 1st. He has become a real monster at the Plate. Guerra has yet to hit his stride, but look out. Both need to be playing. What a problem! The problem for this teams looks to be starting pitching.

Kreig almost has to be the full time DH at this point. I'd start him at first, personally. Guerra to 3rd, let Caraway DH for the rest of the season.

What about the weekend Trosky had, how do you take him out of lineup? .400, 7 RBI, a double, a triple, and 2 SAC's with 0 errors on 15 chances for season. Agree with opening post, CSUN had some character as a team. They were not intimidated, they kept battling every inning in every game, had a lot of energy and engagement in their dugout and they had some grit about them. I respected their game.

Pretty good off speed pitches as well. Based on what I saw in the fall he was in the mix to be in the starting rotation before he got hurt. The only other guy with stuff like that is May.

When I saw him pitch he also has 2 arm slots for FB and change up. That's confusing for a batter.

Krieg definitely needs to be the DH going forward. Trosky had a great series but we need Hainline to get going if we are going to make a run this year. This team is built off of offense and the best bats need to be in the lineup. I just wouldn’t look too far into this series. Yes, I’ll admit from a team perspective CSUN was definitely not scared to play us. They played with energy and were a scrappy bunch. They are probably a middle of the pack Big West team at best. The arms they threw against us were definitely below average. Tons of walks and not a single one of their arms had a swing and miss pitch. That’s why I stated the runners we left on base scared me a little. The pitching is the pitching. We’ve thrown a lot of guys to figure stuff out. Kmatz and Segura will be fine but need May back in that Friday role.

Kmatz and Segura will be fine but need May back in that Friday role. I have a feeling batting order will be bouncing around all year. I expect both Krieg and Caraway will run into a rough patch now that teams have some scouting reports for them. We have a wealth of hitters so we're going to see plenty of matchup L/R stuff, quality backup starts with injuries and situational play. Hainlines bat has actually gotten much better going from 0.058 to 0.250 in the last two series but we all know it's about to get harder. Trosky is one of our only spread/infield type hitters as he lacks the home run power. I don't mind that a bit, someone has to be in for the homers to get extra RBI. The spot I'm most concerned with is catcher. Smith is trending better than his first two seasons but I doubt he will ever be a great hitter averaging over 300, his biggest strides are in OBP this year. Wilson Weber does not have a hit in 10 AB. I know for a fact the guy can hit and hit with power but we need him to get out of his slump.

I like Trosky at short. And I think Hainline filled 3b quite well. Tough decision for MC.
