Thoughts? How does USC go from being the most dominant college baseball team of all time to a complete afterthought/basement dweller?
It's not like they are in a bad location, or were some outlier small school that only dominated because no one else put in the effort. They should have EVERYTHING in place to make them a perpetual contender on a national scale.

Having to drive to Irvine for practice is pretty darn brutal...not sure how much it's impacting them but they have a 1.5 hour commute to do pretty much anything this year...

Without looking too deeply, I would say that the Beavers can’t afford many stumbles. The conference looks to have screwed itself out of a couple of host possibilities already. There aren’t a lot of RPI builders left on the Beaver schedule, but there are a lot of RPI killers.

Go 2-1 (or better every weekend and the hosting/RPI/ranking will take care of itself) *I know you know that and it goes without saying...but I said it.

It's not like they are in a bad location, or were some outlier small school that only dominated because no one else put in the effort. They should have EVERYTHING in place to make them a perpetual contender on a national scale. Gillespie was in a Super Regional, the Corvallis Super Regional, in 2005 but had posted non-winning seasons in three of the previous four seasons for the first time in more than 80 years. The foolish USC fanbase thought that they could do better and chased off Gillespie. USC hired Chad Kreuter who is a demonstrably bad coach and fired Kreuter after three years. USC hired Frank Cruz, who was found to have cheated right before year three. USC promoted Dan Hubbs after Cruz was fired. The Trojans got a pretty good regional draw in Lake Elsinore but lost to the criminally-underrated Cavaliers, which would win a National Championship at season's end. Two year's later, Hubbs posted the worst USC season in more than 30 years. It seemed like the Trojans were rebuilding. But USC grew impatient and fired Hubbs. USC hired Jason Gill, which put up two worse seasons than the two seasons that cost Hubbs his job. USC put up the best season in eight years last year but were screwed out of a spot, thanks, in part, to Oregon. But the big issue last year was the Committee was a freaking joke, worst Committee in at least eight years. USC had a bad start this year, but USC started 5-6-1 in nonconference play last year and then took off, so I would not necessarily count them out yet. Still, USC has sucked for almost two decades, because of pure foolish pride. The "we can do better" mindset is often dead wrong and in the most stupid and foolish way imaginable.

Another issue you can't overlook is Coach Savage at UCLA - the program and player development.
In recent years, the preponderance of UCLA's best soCal talent had USC offers.
And UCLA is not the only elite program mining area talent, Vandy, LSU, TCU and others are aggressively recruiting the state of California.

0-0 record ought to be between the 2-1 and the 1-2 teams in 6th place. 1.5 games back of 1st. I think win % is usually how standings are listed. In baseball, the first factor is by games over/under .500. If there's a tie to be broken, then they go to win %.
