Oregon State has started in Surprise every year for the last decade, and 2024 is the first year with six. The last time that the Beavs allowed more than five unearned runs in the first four days was in Santa Barbara back in 2012, 11.

What historically has been a pitching and defense squad...with a hit and run, lots of pressure offense mentality has turned into a more "bash brothers" offense. Bludgeon the other team to death. Have the "O" make up for any pitching/defense lapses. Someone said it earlier. OSU looks more like a historical top level SEC team this year.

I don't think it has be either/or.....I think our coaching staff is still about pitching, and defense, we just happen to have a historically loaded lineup. The defense will come around I think. Hainline was a second baseman at Wazzu I believe. So the transition might take him a bit. Guerra was good at 3rd. I'm betting he can adjust and be a fine first baseman. Caraway has a cannon at 3rd, and is playing like an upperclassman already. The pitching staff is intriguing. A couple freshmen looked really good in surprise. Hutch, Mundt, Holmes, Montgomery, oakes....some good innings there. I think Hunter and Kmatz will come around. Gotta knock the rust off. Nice thing is with guys like Bazzana, and Caraway (who seems to be well rounded already)we can play small ball. Its tough to not let guys like Turley, Guerra, Kasper, etc swing away though. As we've seen crooked numbers can happen very quickly.

Fwiw, I was just being a bit of a smart ass, referring to us only scoring 6 runs, and the pitching and D were very good....a contrast from the first couple days. My only meaning was it's baseball. Every game is gonna be different, and it's it's too early to come to many conclusions. I'm just happy it's baseball season once again!

Most of those were attributable to one specific error, not a systemic collapse. Five errors on the weekend. Two committed by Trent Caraway and two committed by Mason Guerra. Caraway's first error spoiled what was otherwise a great appearance by Mejia. Ferguson had to come on and pitch his way out of runners on first and second to limit the damage to four. Guerra's second error also hurt in a 6-4 ballgame. Lucky to get out of there. Oregon State needed Keljo to pitch his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth to limit the damage to two.
