We’re back to sucking again We lost to a hot team, on the road, at their place. The results sucked, the OSU basketball team didn’t.

We lost to a hot team, on the road, at their place. The results sucked, the OSU basketball team didn’t. Only a joke. Other than letting them feast on the offensive glass it was a mostly solid effort, just wasn't enough to get the job done.

This was a weird game for me. I felt pretty good about how Beavers played coming out of first half. But several minutes into second half, I never felt like they would win despite UCLA never having a double digit lead. The aggressive UCLA D and hard hedges in ball screens seemed to eliminate any offensive flow, and I was disappointed that Tinkle didn’t make any real adjustments at half. Ball movement was poor, not enough off the ball screens and hard cutting with purpose. And that’s how he end up with only 6 assists. But if you told me before game Beavers would shoot 51% from field and 36% from 3, I would have loved the Beavers’ chances. Problem was the D limited the Beavs to only 14 3-pt attempts. Beavers had 20 in AZ upset and in last game against UCLA. Not saying this to stir up the Tinkle debate, but think he got out coached by Cronin in this one.
As many have pointed out, rebounding was an issue with UCLA grabbing 10 more offensive rebounds than Beavs. UCLA also had 4 fewer turnovers. All that led to 12 more FG attempts by UCLA than Beavs hoisted up. Add in a sub 60% FT shooting night and all that leads to Beavers looking OK but not having a strong chance to win.
There were definitely some good things. Four players in double figures was nice, though not sure how many conference games Beavers will win on the road when Pope has third highest FG attempts on team. Rataj had another pretty good game. And Bilodeau continued to show he can be an effective Pac 12 player if he’d stay out of foul trouble. Let’s hope Beavers can take down USC for the split — and first road conference win in more than a year.
Go Beavs!

Doesn't matter who you play when your 3 bigs are a combined 1 for 6 from the field, 0 for 3 from the free throw and 3 rebounds you generally aren't going to do well.

Not easy to lose shooting 51% from the field. But, -10 on the offensive glass will do it.

There was a reason they struggled: UCLA's defense. I'm looking forward to a rare road victory on Saturday. This team can do it.

Lack of an adequate post player is killing the Beavs. Ibekwe and Marial are the worst pair of 5’s in the league. Both lack rebounding, blocking out and scoring ability, Beavs at time look like it 4 on 5……..

The lack of points don’t bother me — a team can overcome lack of offense out of the post, especially when Tyler and Michael can score from the midrange. It’s the lack of rebounding and D they too often get from the post. KC and Chol get some blocks here and there, but more often than not they look lost on D — especially KC. The other issue on offense is that Wayne wants low post scoring from his center, but they’re not good enough to supply that. If you don’t have the guys to do that, you need to adjust the offense and Wayne hasn’t done that. I will say KC shows us a glimpse here and there, but he’s not a Pac 12 starting center. And until he gets in better shape and shows some aggressiveness, I have my doubts whether he ever will be. Comes down to recruiting. Good centers are hard to come by, but if Tinkle can’t recruit one the he needs to adjust things accordingly. Have to do one or the other.

Tinkle has taken mostly unrecruited and often inexperienced big men and put them into the NBA or overseas Pro leagues. Eubanks was recruited but very inexperienced, he improved annually while here. Big G improved bigtime while here. Silva improved bigtime while here. Kelley improved, maybe not as much as the others, but he was somewhat polished in his capabilities when he arrived. You just can't compare them with players like Bona who were 5 star players out of high school that had been playing longer at a higher level. I can't fault him on development, Ibekwe and Mariol have improved while here as well. If there's anything to fault the coaches on it would be the ability to recruit high level big men that are going to stick around (Washington comes to mind, wish he had stuck around).

We're most always losing to hot teams and if they aren't hot they'll start their streak with us. Wow... yeah seems like another justification/another excuse... a 9-11 UCLA team who had scored 70 twice in Pac12 play?? I would say many thought OSU as the "hot" team after the Arizona weekend. UCLA had gone 3-1 vs UW win by 12, @ fading ASU by 2, @ UA losing huge lead, lost by 6, @ last place USC win by 15. They were playing better as a team with 12 underclassmen, but hot?? One of the best opportunities an OSU team has ever had to win at Pauley. The road struggles are very real... the numbers posted during last night's telecast were staggering.

I stand corrected on the "hot" thing. Had it in my head that they'd won 3 of the last 4 coming in without looking it up. I had hopes for a win, I'm disappointed but not upset. This team is not to the point that it plays consistently ok to well on the road. More often they can play badly, they didn't play badly last night. Hopefully they play better against USC and get the win.
