Pope ESPN national player of the week 50 points, 4 rebounds, 11 assists, and 2 steals. 6/13 from three, 11/15 from two (including 7/8 against Arizona State), and 10/12 from the line (both misses against Arizona). Hopefully, Pope can keep it going down in Los Angeles. |

While I still would say it's more likely than not Pope leaves after this year (although everyone said the same thing last year), he does genuinely seem to like it here at OSU, and has come out in defense of WT multiple times and stated he loves the group of guys he's playing with. The above tweet just another reason to make me think he's genuine. Would be very easy to just retweet the individual accomplishment but the "go beavs" makes it a team accomplishment as well. He's been a little Damien-esque in his responses to rumors about him leaving the program, and has thus far held up that end of the bargain.
I do think this group of sophomores has something very positive going for them if they stick together.

It'd be great use of some of that $2.7 mil??? Alas... pretty sure coaches can't in anyway be involved in NIL deals. Not even sure they can donate to NIL organizations?? |

Players aren't going to talk about leaving and their NIL hopes. If I remember correctly OSU had a player last season talk as if he was staying and ended up at St. Johns. Sometimes folks forget that interview type "puff" pieces are geared to the positive. They aren't meant to be critical ir delve to deeply into multiple aspects. Whether talking about a player, program, site the interviewee is going to praise. Pope seems like a great kid, been a very good player who will have options. He was very diplomatic in his words. I'll have zero problem if he opts for a better opportunity. Hope not, but that's how it plays out these days. OSU like every school will just have to adjust and make due. You found a "Pope" once, do it again. |

There were some who were saying Pope would be gone after last year. Didn't happen. If it happens after this year I'll be sad for a day, but I'm thinking it could go either way depending on how the season goes. If the season goes south, and it hasn't yet, we could lose 3-4 starters to the portal. If they're truly jelling and finish well, that number could potentially go to as low as 0. I think the collectives might have pony up some $$ or additional $$ to make it to where it's not a choice of good money against little to no money for some of our kids, if the team does well the rest of the season. A good showing this year likely changes things as far as retention goes, money being close to equal. All of these kids were recruited to a low to very low win team. If they're having fun and obviously making headway they just might see the improvement and impact they've already made, and might be interested in seeing how well they can do together as upperclassman. |

Not that we ever hear, or maybe care, but how many enter the portal for "greener grass" and don't get offers at all? Or end up in a worse situation? As is the want in media circles we mostly hear about the exceptions and of course there is little follow up. Not like there really could be on each and every entry. The portal and NIL are very enticing to many players, but also just another possible way for student athletes to be taken advantage of. I liked Gundy's veiled comment about how it was different when he played. Being a career backup just meant you learned to work harder and to persevere. Team unity and brotherhood is tough to build when a dozen or so key pieces are coming and going. Those who have remained loyal and see their hard work derailed by newcomers have to feel slighted in some way. I can't imagine coaching college hoops these days... with the smaller roster size building a unified, close locker room must be insanely difficult knowing a kid can up and leave any time. Or vice versa, a player's status can completely change with a single transfer in. Not an era I'd want to coach in... |

The issue with collectives like OSU's, like the vast majority of schools, there is not the amount of $ available to keep kids who get 5 figure offers or more. Especially for a sport that doesn't make money. Nor will keeping a couple players change that. It is very much a "game" of trying to invest where it will pay off the most. Right now, and almost always it will be focused on football. Certainly in the next 2+ years it will have to be. As much as some think NIL $ is bottomless it is not for most schools, and most large donors give for sound investments, sometimes huge amounts. But, they are not going to give annually to entice players to stay, who can eventually leave anyway. It is not a sound use of their money vs physical plant type giving. Some schools have both, OSU is one of many that does not. And we are very, VERY fortunate for the big donors we have and all they've done for OSU... athletics and academics. |
