Add in high school recruits who think they always deserve to start before setting foot on a college court and should get good NIL money right away, and it is tough. Let year’s Illinois team got derailed by two freshmen who wouldn’t be coached and a transfer who was more concerned about looking good for NBA than the team. Underwood did a much better job of identifying transfers who are team players this year and freshmen who at least seem to understand sitting and learning. Of course the proof of the latter will come this offseason when see if they stick around. But at least there doesn’t seem to be any upsetting team dynamics. Think transfers have been part of the problem for Muss at Arkansas this year too. And, of course, we all know what happened to Beavs.

Wonder if Taylor is regretting that choice. Not necessarily, leaving, but picking St. Johns. He's only playing 20 min/game and averaging 5 pts per game. Not exactly furthering his career. Not that we ever hear, or maybe care, but how many enter the portal for "greener grass" and don't get offers at all? Or end up in a worse situation? As is the want in media circles we mostly hear about the exceptions and of course there is little follow up. Not like there really could be on each and every entry. The portal and NIL are very enticing to many players, but also just another possible way for student athletes to be taken advantage of. I liked Gundy's veiled comment about how it was different when he played. Being a career backup just meant you learned to work harder and to persevere. Team unity and brotherhood is tough to build when a dozen or so key pieces are coming and going. Those who have remained loyal and see their hard work derailed by newcomers have to feel slighted in some way. I can't imagine coaching college hoops these days... with the smaller roster size building a unified, close locker room must be insanely difficult knowing a kid can up and leave any time. Or vice versa, a player's status can completely change with a single transfer in. Not an era I'd want to coach in... I'm hoping that the amount of transfers that are having buyer's remorse will give pause or maybe slow down the portal some going forward. There are also the kids that go in the portal and can't find a home. Can't imagine giving up your schollie to find out nobody wants you.

Thing is, it's not just some players, it's a LOT of players not finding a new home. For the 2022-23 cycle it was supposedly 45% that didn't find a home in basketball. Add to that the risk of not landing the role a kid was hoping to get, there's gotta be a huge number of disappointed players after joining the portal.

I knew it was high, but no where near that number... Football roster being much larger, injuries more prevalent(?), practice player depth needed, probably less than that for football?? Crazy... but, it is players just like Pope that get drawn in to the bigger program hype. He is a great find/player for OSU. He makes "us" highly competitive, but not many are program changers in and of themselves. He can play almost anywhere, but probably a role player in top tier program. But at a program having more sustained success that OSU, it is the $ and the promise of maybe post season play. Leaving OSU a guy like Pope will never be the BMOC he is here, nor a more integral part of the scheme and building the program. They are kids still and you never know what they decide... or who is giving them what they consider valued input. Sort of why I hate all the negative posts about who may or may not leave that pop up on every board. Enjoy the players and teams now. No one knows what will happen and you can't do anything about it anyway... why even mention it until it happens?

All these guys are gonna have a canned response about focusing on being here, now. The question is, how much will his value be on the open market? Yep, what else are they supposed to say? Players aren't going to talk about leaving and their NIL hopes. If I remember correctly OSU had a player last season talk as if he was staying and ended up at St. Johns. Sometimes folks forget that interview type "puff" pieces are geared to the positive. They aren't meant to be critical ir delve to deeply into multiple aspects. Whether talking about a player, program, site the interviewee is going to praise. Pope seems like a great kid, been a very good player who will have options. He was very diplomatic in his words. I'll have zero problem if he opts for a better opportunity. Hope not, but that's how it plays out these days. OSU like every school will just have to adjust and make due. You found a "Pope" once, do it again. So does this mean WT gets credit for recruiting/developing a quality player like Pope, someone who wasn't one of the coaches sons, if he has to go do it again?
All kidding aside, I agree he does seem like a great kid, very well-liked on campus as well from what I hear. Won't have hard feelings either way he decides but would love nothing more than to keep seeing him in orange and black.
And in response to the above discussion about NIL and the portal, the number not finding a home isn't terribly surprising considering many schools would likely choose a high school recruit of similar ability over a transfer (in most cases). I do believe I heard that when Lucas entered the portal that OSU was an option for him still but that his NIL deal at UNR was ~$100,000, which was outside of OSU's ability to match. TBD what may be the case now, but Jarod seems to be one of the higher profile guys that found a good landing spot, role, and has done well being the guy at his new home.

Is it just me, or does the symbol on the "Oscar Robertson Trophy" seem to have nothing to do with basketball? That trophy looks more like it should be awarding to the National Leapfrogger of the Week.

I’m assuming they didn’t want to infringe in the air Jordan jumpman design. Either that, or maybe Oscar used to stretch on the floor while holding a ball?

Yeah, he was pretty ripped. You think of old 60's basketball players as soft and squishy, shooting set shots.
