Not really understanding your logic? As long as they’re ready to pony up, Musselman is much “sexier” hire than Alford despite the current down year of the former. Six straight tourney appearances, with two E8 and a S16 at Ark and a S16 at Nevada. Alford has only one appearance while at Nevada — a First Four game last year in which ASU blew them out. So unless he has a big tourney run this year, doubt fan base would be excited about Alford with that big loss and his prior “failings” in its old conference.
But, EM will want bigger money (makes $4.25mil or so now) and is a vagabond. He's has at least 16 stops, including ASU, and will head back to the NBA any chance he can.
If I'm a college looking wouldn't touch the guy unless his buyout equaled his salary owed.
Because of the salary gap, the ASU part of the rumor does seem strange Not sure they’d even match what he’s making now let alone the raise he’d likely get with an extension at Arkansas. But this has been a tough year and not just on the basketball court. And his “vagabond-ness” is helped along reportedly by being difficult and wearing out his welcome. If he’s anything like his dad Bill, who I dealt with some as an editor at publishing house that published his book, I believe it.
If he’s truly looking to get out, ASU could be best job available because as we’ve discussed within the context of candidates to replace Tinkle, there are a limited number of high paying jobs out there. Influx of Big 12 money, combined with new AD and new conference could lead to them salary up to around $3m to make splash hire. Yes, still a long way from his current salary, but possibly better than dealing with another year of difficulties and another bad year that scratches off more of his coaching sheen. As to NBA, not sure I see them calling.
Coaching carousel is always interesting even if it is very likely Tinkle stays perched upon his horse for another year.
