The E8 run was awesome, for sure, but can we agree that, in all reality, that was an absolute lightening in a bottle, just showing up out of nowhere, magical run? It's not like the team/program had been progressing to that level of success for the preceding couple seasons and this was a natural progression of the trajectory of the program. It came out of absolutely NO WHERE! For crying out loud, they were an 8 seed in the Pac-12 tourney. Even if they made it to the conference championship game but lost they wouldn't of been invited to the NCAA tourney. They were that bad throughout the season. So, I think it's misrepresentative to make it sound like that E8 run was proof of growth of the program. Had they made it to the semis the couple seasons before or even made it to the tourney the seasons prior we might think they are ready to contend for the Pac-12 title. No, they were no where near that. It was an aberration, period. Albeit, a really fun one to watch! The minnow that they've been is of their own doing, the University, that is. That's my point. There hasn't been sufficient investment in a head coach in those 30 years. No, overpaying Tinkle does not count as sufficient investment. LOL!

I disagree with your assessment of the seasons. There are not eight stinkers there. There are four stinkers there. Four just awful seasons. One meh season. Three above average (for Oregon State). One excellent season. And one once in a lifetime season. More good than bad, season by season. But the last three seasons have been very deflating after the first seven. It does not take 10 seasons to build a D1 basketball program. It takes seven. Oregon State won the Pac-12 and went to the Elite Eight in seven seasons. And then the bottom fell out. Two seasons of very slow growth since. It gets to be like a discussion about recovering from a recession or high levels of inflation. There has been progress, but has it been enough progress to warrant more time in charge? Some say, "Yes, absolutely." And others ask, "Are you high?" As for level of competition, Oregon State was at or near the bottom of the Pac-12 in program support. Moving to the West Coast Conference provides Oregon State the opportunity to be a big fish in a little pond instead of the minnow in the giant pond that the Beavs were for the last 30+ years. The problem is that Gonzaga is one big ass fish. Yes, but 2023-24 has arguably been Gonzaga's worst year in more than 15 years. Arizona is better than Gonzaga this year, and Oregon State beat Arizona at Gill. McCarthey is smaller than Maples, and Oregon State won at Maples this year. Gonzaga is arguably Gonzaga, because it plays in the West Coast Conference, not in spite of it.

You could see the progress, if you were watching. Oregon State was a 5 seed in the 2021 Pac-12 Tournament. Oregon State was an 8 seed in the 2020 Pac-12 Tournament that got scrubbed after the win over Utah.

They’ve been the runner-up in 2 of the last 7 years. They’re not as good this year, but they will still be tough. And comparing the atmosphere at McCarthey to Maples is laughable.

I am just pointing out that McCarthey would be smaller than the smallest basketball arena in the Pac-12, Maples. Gill is second-smallest, but is larger than every West Coast Conference arena. Pacific has the largest gym in the West Coast Conference this year with McCarthey second. Next year, it is Beasley and then Gill, first and second.

Lol 9k+ seats that have 3k-3500 butts in them looks and feels terrible no matter how loud.

Maples is never close to full for their Men’s games. Maples just sold out against USC last month, 7,563 in attendance. As Judge points out, that sellout was an aberration fueled by Bronny James and the possibility his famous father might show up since Lakers were on a home stand and not playing that night nor night of game against Cal. But you know that already. Stanford had an average attendance of a shade over 3,500. Cal saw an increase of more than 8,000 in attendance for this year’s home game against USC over last year’s game. Every school but two in Pac 12 saw an increase in attendance for their home game this year against USC compared to previous non-Covid impacted game. Only two schools that didn’t see an increase were Arizona and UCLA because games in both years were sold out.

If all teams were selling out their arenas, size of arena might matter. But I’m guessing the atmosphere in a 3,900 seat arena with 2,900 in it is better than 3,500 in a 9,000 seat arena.
