Awesome announcement, wish him all the luck, but I'm confused. Same with Chatfield, both seniors, both were not going to be back. But they are declaring for the draft like they are leaving early.

I think Oladapo has a Covid year coming to him if he wants. Not sure about Chatfield, these days a lot of kids are getting multiple injury exemptions. Could he file for another year? I don't know.

Chatfield and Oladapo are out of eligibility. One or both may qualify for some kind of hardship waiver, but they are indicating that they will not be pursuing. Plus, I am assuming that by "declaring," they put themselves on the combine's radar and the NFL's radar.

It is confusing these days with the COVID exemption and just a LOT of exceptions being given. Little Tagovailoa is trying to get an extra year, even though he played 5+ games in 4 separate years that were NOT the COVID season. When so many exceptions get made, it's hard to tell when the rules are going to be followed or they're going to be ignored.

As far as I can tell, the covid year gives players six years to play four. Both Oladapo and Chatfield have played five seasons and redshirted one, so it would mean a seventh season of college football. Both players played during the 2020 season but Chatfield played an entire 12-game season and Oladapo played in OSU's 6-game season. So it looks like they probably don't have eligibility left unless they are able to use a waiver for whatever reason. That would make more sense as far as posting their intentions to go for the NFL.

A couple things. The Beavers played 7 games in 2020 (not that that really matters). I'm thinking the NCAA originally set out to make it 6 to play 4 then later turned it to a blanket extra year of eligibility because even the schools were getting confused. I could be wrong, but Jaydon Grant played for us in 6 different seasons, and aside from his freshman year (2 games) he played 6+ games every season. I believe that freshman year was deemed an injury year, but that still means he played 6 or more games every year (5 years) which means ineligible for other redshirt possibilities. Kinda confusing.

As I understand it, everything is the same, except 2020 didn't count. Grant played in 2020 (didn't count) and fewer than 4 games in his frosh season (doesn't count), so 4 years that do count. You can count a season as a redshirt year with 4 or fewer games played. Once we get far enough past 2020, there should no longer be any confusion - medical exemptions notwithstanding.

Grant's case is pretty clear-cut. You get one regular redshirt year, and one medical hardship year.
Redshirted in 2016, still has four years
Only played in three games in 2017, then hurt and missed rest of the season.
Played full season in 2018, three years left
Played full season in 2019, two seasons left
Free year for Covid in 2020
Played full year in 2021, one season left after medical hardship waiver for 2017 granted.
Played full season in 2022, eligibility exhausted.
