Anyone else notice our DL will have at least 5 300 lb dudes next year? Wright, Johnson, Schuster, Langi, and Pomee. Hill, Saluni, Collins and Howard are likely not far behind.

Tuiaki is a good coach and recruiter. I’m excited about his hire and to see what he can do. He’s already got the DL bolstered for next year.

Angie Machado @angiemachado1 · 4m …and now it’s official. DL Tevita Pome’e has transferred from Oregon to Oregon State. #GoBeavs
Asking as just a fan and not an expert , is it good to have your average DL over 300 LBS ? Doesnt that make it more likely that the line exhausts itself earlier than later in a game . Does it affect the players ability to catch a mobil QB or a half back, running back, tight end? Do players on the offensive line average over 300 as well and isnt that a plus as far as blocking ?

With the recent additions makes me wonder if we’ll see a little different fronts. It’s always good to have at least a few for short yardage and goaline situations. It’s give and take with the size. In general size is better against the run than pass. That’s why it’s like a chess match between coordinators trying to get a personnel advantage. When you see an offense hurry up and not sub they’re keeping that personnel on the field. DL depth is a big must so you can rotate guys and keep them fresh. It’s the most physically exhausting position to play.

It always bothered me a little bit that the Jonathan Smith teams always seemed to be stocked with mostly what I would consider undersized interior defensive linemen. Everyone loves a guy like Aaron Donald but a DL like him is pretty rare. I believe that Bray and staff are landing guys who are probably at least decently athletic for their size. They can plug up the middle to a higher degree and allow the inside linebackers even more freedom.

Do players on the offensive line average over 300 as well and isnt that a plus as far as blocking ? Scheme matters but overall its about disruption and if they are athletic 300 or just fat. With Bray as DC we run a mixed 3-4 and a mixed 3-3-5 with a sprinkling of 4-4 and 4-3. In any 3 man front the line exists to direct the offense to the ILB and pressure mostly comes off the edge. In the NFL or in college if you have a blue chip DT, can regularly engage a double team and collapse the pocket, then the defense becomes monstrous with a 3 man front that affect the play allowing 8 people playing against the backfield. Either way if guys can play heavy but athletic in the middle you will control running lanes and take up more blockers. Outside of rare talents that's the job, engage as many offensive players as you can to free up the rest of the defense. The big deal for us is we have a high likelyhood of being able to rotate a bunch of guys that are all big enough to keep a guard and the center busy. This will make for more 1 on 1 outside matchups and make free blitzers more likely. If you are relying on DT to stop a mobile QB by themselves you are probably screwed. If your DT are smaller you are likely better off playing a 4-3 where you have more guys to block on every play but that puts more pr sure on the secondary.

I think Collins has a lot of potential. Very athletic for his size and looks like he could put on 10-15 and still maintain it.

It seems like the size could really help us stuff the middle, and occupy more linemen inside to allow our linebackers to make plays. With more depth, we can rotate them through more frequently and keep them fresh. As long as we continue to have linebackers and edge players who can run.

With one of the 300 lbers hanging in the middle. With a big guy like Collins and a long guy like Stover you can just let Collins go ape off his explosive first step while the big guy and the EDGW cover run game.

At least from what I've heard, he's got that quickness and athleticism that might set him apart. But the Beavers had James Rawls (6-2, 284), Semisi Saluni (6-3, 286), Isaac Hodgins (6-0, 270) and Joe Golden (6-5, 290) getting a fair amount of playing time. I'm not saying they were bad or anything, but that's a pretty light D-line. So I'm looking forward to seeing an OSU D-line with some legit bulk.

Good defensive linemen have four attributes. !) Strength. 2) Co-ordination. 3) 10 yard quickness. and 4) hostility.
