In boxing, the axiom is "styles make fights". Silas has a style that will win him some fights if he can be in a position to be successful. His ceiling is limited at Oregon State. He did not demand a double team like an elite receiver will. His catch radius was small. He struggled with getting off the jam because of his size. He has elite speed, good to excellent hands, and is a weapon with gadget plays. We didn't run a style of offense that really put Bolden in a position to be successful given his skillset. He excelled anyway, but if you make him an option in an offense that is designed to put players in space, look out. How many times did he look like he wouldn't get to the edge, but would beat the defender and turn it into a big play? I think he will increase his big play frequency in an offense that gets him the ball more Elite speed, like I mentioned above. He will for sure be missed in the return game. But his career long play is a 50 yarder, and it came in the 23 season, and Ant consistently had the big plays and ypc advantage. Silas had big plays and then disappeared for long stretches of the game. He had 1000 yards over 2 seasons, and outside of the Utah game where he had a single 45 yard rush and an 18 yarder against SDSU, he was not particularly productive as a runner either. The thing is, the offers that he is getting now isn't proof that he's a superstar. He's a talented 3rd option for most of these guys, and on that point I agree with you that his big play frequency will increase since he will mostly be lined up against a nickle instead of the starting CB. But I bet his touches go WAY down.

But I bet his touches go WAY down. Yes. exactly this. Bolden simply isn't a WR1. He is a big play threat. He has some dynamic ability with the ball in his hands, but he was not a game in and game out chain mover. He averaged barely over 4 catches a game for just under 60 yards. The best game of his career is 6 catches for 100 yards and one TD. That same game he had the long rushing play for 53 more yards and a TD. He has crossed 100 yards receiving exactly one time. Then in order 99 yards (2022) 87 yards (UCLA this year) 76 yards (WSU this year) 66 yards (Arizona this year). His top 5 best games of his entire career amount to 428 yards, which for you math wizards at home is less than 100 yards per game. Bolden is being pursued by teams so, as OA noted, he can do serious damage against nickels and safeties. He is an elite 3rd option and gadget player. He ain't "Him" as apparently cool kids would say now. And again, I am not saying that to bash Bolden, I am saying that to be exactly objective about what he was on the field and how he impacted the offense.

Bolden is obviously not Cooks. I don't think anyone here thinks he is as good as Cooks. But Bolden is a high level complementary receiver (as Cooks is in Dallas). As has been noted, he is a big play threat in the passing game and in the return game. So is Gould. The Beavers would have been in a much better situation with Bolden coming back next year (and Gould for that matter). But that's not how it is, so we'll have to hope that a mix of new guys (on paper they look good) and holdovers will allow for a decent passing game.

Is the portal closed for new entries but players can still sign with a new team? Or is both entry and exit both closed? If the latter what happens to the 'unsigned'....SOL?

Auburn offered a bag and a schollie. Right now, Bolden's agent is talking to the money man at the On To Victory NIL (Auburn Collective).
$ilas $miles.

However, I believe that Bolden is a fourth-year "true junior." He may have graduated/be graduating. If so, the portal never officially closes for him.

Kids can't declare again until the next round in the spring, but those that have can still pick a school. In the meantime, schools are no longer required to keep kids on scholarship beyond the current quarter they have declared. Basically, if I'm reading it right and the stuff I read wasn't outdated, those that have declared are no longer on scholarship unless the school agrees to keep them on, and they're free to look at new schools. The transfer portal period is basically so players can give schools a heads up that they're leaving, and new schools can freely contact them unless there are recruiting dead period s involved.

The also don’t have to sign anything other than a financial aid agreement. They basically just need to show up at their new school by the start of the quarter/term at their new school. Many schools are not starting until next week.
