Maybe your firms all imploded because one of their attorneys spent all of their time posting novels on a Beaver message board 😆 instead of working. Could be. Or it could have had something to do with starting law in 2006. Great Recession took down the first two. COVID-19 is probably most at fault for the third. I ain't a lawyer. I do know many and I talk to our DOJ more than I care too... but what I have gathered is Lawyering' is hard and a lot of people enter the field with delusions of great wealth only to meet a bitter reality of it being a high competitive field that is saturated with talent. Of course, you'd know better than me. It is just what I hear 'round the water cooler ya know.

I think he's driven to be the best, period. Being an undersized walk on...kinda awkward. I think he needs to prove himself. It's unfortunate he burned bridges in Corvallis. I think in his mind, the desire to get to the top trumps everything else.......he was gonna leave OSU as soon as he got bigger offers. The timing, and his execution, were just horrible.

The problem with lawyering is that there a ton of bad lawyers. And they oftentimes sign more clients than great attorneys. Some lawyers do better than me financially; some do worse. Some lawyers are better than me; some are worse. Lawyering is no magic cure-all. Like almost every job, you tend to get out of it what you put in.

Our former coach (see what I did there) was purposely vague, aloof and and disconnected to most the people connected to the university. Because of this I never felt he had any deep or true devotion to the the university. When he was successful this did not matter to me.
The big question was why was he like this? I believe there are several reasons. When you combine the reasons it is very telling.
The first reason, he was an average to poor communicator. This obtuse style allowed him to throw out vague sound bits that were difficult to interprete or follow up on. This prevented attempts of clarification, as he was not very capable of this and wanted to avoid it. It also illustrated his disdain and/or indifference to those he was speaking to. Though this communication style is not usually a problem when things are going well.
Second reason it allows a poor to average communicator to motivate others as you can speak in vague platitudes. This allows others to interpret the meaning and motivate to said interpretation. It also allows the appearance of communicating something when in actuality almost nothing is communicated. This works when people have at least a modicum of confidence in the speaker.
Third and final reason I will point out is it facilitates hiding true emotions and motivations. Our former coach was actively hiding his selfishness, disdain for certain groups and his motivations. Nobody is completely altruistic. Our former coach still has many friends and alliances, he just no longer has any use for Oregon State fans. He no longer sees a need to show loyalty and altruism to Oregon State. He showed us his true colors.
That last sentence is a huge mistake by him. I almost guarantee he will desire the good graces of Oregon State fans and alumni again in the future. I will choose not to give it. Hardly any coach has ever left and showed success elsewhere. He has one possible chance if he can find a great defensive coordinator then maybe he will do enough to keep Michigan State happy. If I were bet on that I would say it won't happen. I do not think he looked at the past history of coaches leaving us and Michigan State's history and analyzed it accurately. Either he was desperate to leave or delusional about his abilities (my opinion, obviously). I think he could be somewhere close to .500, but not much better. I don't think he will last longer than 4 years at this type of record. You could argue that is a long time in today's environment.
I get the impression that Michigan Sate was desperate to find a coach whose character was not likely to embarrass them, like the last time. The irony of this is they should be embarrassed and/or worried in how their new coach left his previous job.
Our previous coach was an average at best recruiter. He had to cover this up with intense evaluation to find overlooked recruits, who would listen. He was good at this with his staff. I am not sure the new school will have much patience when they see the recruiting results.
I remember listening to Chris Peterson comment that he did not think our previous coach was looking to be a head coach and then something to the effect that he was only interested in Oregon State because it was his alma mater and an option. I found it really interesting. 2 main points are poignant in this comment. Peterson implied that nobody but us would be interested in this former coach of ours at the time and that Peterson had no clue what the former assistant coach wanted. Peterson did not seem to think to highly of our former coach. Our former coach either communicated poorly or deceived Peterson.
These are my musings. Sorry it is long winded.
