Using the talent on last year's OSU roster as a general guideline, let's consider the kind of recruiting it takes to assemble a Top 15 team: Last year's team featured (1) Talia, (2) Raegen, (3) Timea and (4) Donovan. Not one player on the current roster comes close to matching the talent level of any of those four players.
Syd, and the rest of the OSU staff, pretty much need to bring in one player for 2025 who is of the talent level of ONE of those four players. For the 2026 season they pretty much need to bring in two players in that talent category... If the Beavs cannot achieve this kind of talent infusion I do not see any path for it returning to national relevance.
So, in a nutshell, if Syd is OSU's primary magnet for attracting Premiere talent to the program, she basically has 24 months to get it done. GO BEAVS!!

With Syd's personality I think she will be an excellent recruiter. However, looking back at the last 5 ESPN top one hundred recruits (2021 - 2025) the WCC and MWC signed one top one hundred recruit during that time. I think it is unrealistic to expect OSU to consistently get premiere talent, they just don't have as much to sell as they did when they were in one of the premiere women's basketball conferences in the country. The best players want to play against elite competition (as we found out when OSUs best players transferred) and they won't be able to do that in the WCC/MWC. Maybe they can occasionally get a top 100 recruit, but imo they will have to rely on superior player evaluation and development. I hope I am wrong, but I think the days of being a top 15 program are a thing of the past.

Sadly, you're probably more right than wrong, I think most of us would be shocked to see some top 100 players show up now. I don't relish looking like Portland State so much!!

It will be interesting to see what happens to attendance in the next few years. I expect attendance to not drop off much this year and maybe next. Attendance usually lags a couple years behind results, whether it is negative or positive. Hopefully people will continue to support the program, but eventually the drop off in competition and the quality of the product on the floor will take its toll.

WereBeaver,
As always appreciate the well thought out and insightful comments you bring to the group.
I moved to Spokane Wa several years ago and attend and follow Gonzaga women's basketball while still putting the women's program at OSU in my all time favorite position.
It is interesting to note that the Gonzaga women's program attracts sell out crowds for most games (around 5000 fans I believe).
I believe that if OSU remains constantly at or near the top of their new conference standings they will be able to keep attendance figures strong.
However unfortunately your observation about the talent level on the team dropping is probably correct. However if they keep Coach Rueck who knows?
I still have hopes that the new PAC 8 (or 10 or 12) will eventually equal or surpass the old one.
Hopefully the power that be in the new PAC are finding a new commissioner who is both far sighted and competent (he or she is really needed!)

Portland St. is a program that has had very little success historically playing in the Big Sky, a conference that is definitely a step below the WCC or Mountain West. You are setting the bar REALLY low if you are projecting the Beavs to end up comparable to PSU. At least set your sites on Univ. of Portland.

On Tuesday morning I saw she was travelling to Idaho Falls. Do we have a recruiting target in that area?

Gonzaga joining the Pac-12 is huge for WBB. Of course not nearly at the level of the old Pac-12, but shaping up to be a solid conference for WBB.
