Good to know. I thought in the 5-7 model the top 5 conference champs qualify automatically so being the top G5 champ is a good opening for a non p4 program? Is 5-7 a thing yet, or is it still 6-6? That’s a big difference in height. |

It is my opinion. It's not as if you're going to hear her come out and say it. It just stands to reason that she would want the MWC with OSU and WSU as expansion members rather than potentially giving up a lot or all of her power if there's a reverse merger. Of course, if she were to be named the new Pac's commish, that would all go away. I will add that even assuming the Pac-2 win the legal battle, there has to be some strong incentives involved for the MWC to agree to a reverse merger. If becoming a power conference is off the table and OSU and WSU choose to keep the money to fund their own programs, what is left? Quite a bit is left frankly. Two new members who will increase the SOS of the conference, great in region travel, reopens the media contract for adjustments, adds great stability to the conference, and Commish has said she would like to go to 16. We get to keep anything that was the PAC 2 money and awarded in court but there are significant benefits to the MWC without any of that. Gloria is smart she knows there is far more value in PAC 12 brand than the MWC brand. I think this is the big key... |

We should have hired her rather than the idiots we did. I think the odds are low we cherry pick the MWC in the near future. If this latest 14 million buck payment in exchange for games proposal flies, I think the odds of cherry picking the MWC in the next couple years jumps significantly. Why? |

If the MWC absorbs the 2 schools, I'm pretty sure Nevarro is stuck with negotiating with her existing partners. They renegotiate rater than go away. The Pac 2 will be negotiating its own deal as soon as they win their court cases. I highly doubt it will be a long term deal unless it is very favorable terms that extend to new additions. If the big guys don't want to play, it could be a year at a time with an operator like Root Sports for all we know. Once expansion is set, there'd be open negotiating with just about every media outlet, and it'd likely be well over what the MWC will ever get from their current media partners. Navarro would likely MUCH prefer a reverse merger right now, tomorrow morning even, over absorbing OSU & WSU under the MWC or losing some of her schools and being stuck outside of whatever PAC rebuild there is. Remember, she was a higher up in the Pac-12 offices at one time, she's well aware of the brand value that name carries compared to that of the MWC. Odds are, if the league operates as the Pac-2 and later steals some of her teams and opens up a position for a new commissioner, she'll jump at getting her resume in the pile. She might even jump at that opportunity if Kliavkoff gets canned right awsy and they opt to hire a permanent commissioner rather than an interim commissioner. If this latest 14 million buck payment in exchange for games proposal flies, I think the odds of cherry picking the MWC in the next couple years jumps significantly. Why? The Pac 2 apparently already offered to cherry pick the MWC a few months back and the teams that wanted to go took it to a conference vote to dissolve and couldn't get the votes. We know for a fact there are several schools interested and we are interested in several specific schools. A merger only benefits the MWC as an entity if we take the whole conference. The MWC offered a scheduling alliance (which in itself does not benefit the conference - they already have a full schedule if they want) with the intention of merging, with a fine if we don't take everyone down the line. Suddenly we get the agreement to schedule, for an up front payment but NO penalty for taking just some of the teams. Once we pay the 14 million and get the schedule for next year in the Pac-2 is basically free to negotiate with the teams they want and figure out the timing. SanDiego was apparently ready at one point to pay a 17 million exit fee to join the Pac 10 this season or next, until they found out they were late and it was going to cost 34 million. After that, I read an article that mentioned that BSU had then considered giving extended notice and paying 17 million to join in the '25 season. That fell apart when the Pac 9 became the Pac 2. Basically, cherry picking and playing as a bigger conference in '24 ain't happening, but '26 and even '25 is not out of the question if the lawsuits go well and the Pac-2 has rights to the money. At which point, all that's left to do is negotiate with desired schools, determine if they are paying their own buyouts or if the Pac-2 is helping - this could be with money now in exchange for reduced distributions in the future... who knows. At that point it means lining up a media deal for an expanded future conference, getting the cherry picked schools in line, figure out the money, give notice to the conferences that will be raided, and wait for it all to happen... and there won't be a penalty beyond the buyouts. It's a long process if you want to keep it out of the 34 million a team price range, but if we wait 2 entire years to start, it'll never get done in time to beat the 2 year time clock the NCAA has given to remain a viable conference. Tick, tick, tick.... the clock is ticking already. We will hear something within a year or year and a half, or fold. |

Frankly, I don't think you will see much of a difference in a Media deal between a PAC 14, with the entire MWC rolled in, or the PAC 8 with 6 cherry picked MWC teams. Just not that much difference in value to a media exec. Given the Athletic dept. debt at WSU and OSU I doubt we give money to other schools to pay exit fees for a small increase in media $$. I guess time will tell. WSU in particular is in financial trouble, |

WSU in particular is in financial trouble, Thing is, a Pac 14 with the entire MWC merging in could happen the day we get a media commitment after all the legal gyrations are finalized, assuming the legal gyrations come in the Pac 2's favor. It would be the easiest and fastest plan of action. I'd be ok with that, but it seems there is a plan out there in the ether for a stronger league and hopefully keep the MWC viable so there's a 10 conference FBS (until that changes) and to build the Pac to where it remains a P5 conference. Supposedly people in the industry have said, if you own the name, you own the history, and the Pac 12 name is a valuable brand. I assume the Pac 8 is just a beginning, and it would be 10/12/14 quite quickly. The MWC's exit fees are pretty much the highest in the G5, a couple are in the 2 million range. They probably would attempt to get 4-6 more teams fast, and set up east/west divisions for scheduling. Many of those candidates were discussed months ago, all of them have horribly low media contracts and would still likely be interested if we could even get a 12-15 million per team guarantee. With the right mix of teams, the future Pac could be a fairly strong league before P5 money starts rolling in. The big thing is keeping that P5 status. It gets a bigger portion of yhe money, and bigger media contracts. Even with all of their torpedoing of yhe league, I think at least some media outleys would be happy to see a Power conference based out of the left half of the country. |
