Canzano talks to Coach Smith about irons in the fire.
“I’m not trying to be sarcastic here. I’ve got an agent that’s got a job. He best be finding out what is out there and people calling. That’s how that works. I can tell you from his side he best be working just because I’m paying him so much. They get a percentage and I’m making him a couple million bucks. I’m not trying to be sarcastic. Any coach, they’re aware of what’s potentially out there if their agent is doing their job. I’m not trying to dodge the question. I’m trying to be truthful.”

<heavy, disheartened sigh>
No point getting fired up. What will happen will happen. Completely out of our hands.

I listened to the pod cast and his comments did not sound any better. I get he has to look after his assistants. I think that is his concern at this point. The timing sucks though this week.
It came across as my agent gets a percentage of my salary, the more I make, the more he makes, so he better be on top of things.

At least he's being transparent. He's in a bind. He's not so confident in the future of this program going forward. Retaining his coaches.......and players. He's probably stressing. Only so much Barnes can do to reassure JS that the beavs will be a power conference type of team. Reality is that we probably won't be. I understand that he's got to look out for himself and fam. I understand.

I mean he’s basically just describing his agents job in that quote. I’m guessing he’d be expecting the same from him even if nothing was changing in the PAC-12 going forward, and we’d be hearing similar rumors. I’m confident that Smith has a good base of coaches to talk to about things. Peterson, Erickson, and Riley can all give him good advice on coaching at lower levels or taking higher profile jobs. That said I hope he decides to stay at OSU for a long time.

He'd be stupid not to test the market to figure out his value, but yeah, not the most reassuring article.
I wouldn't blame Smith for leaving in a few years if we are wandering the G5 wasteland with declining budgets. We'd all understand.
But right now? At OSU's most vulnerable hour? I'm going to be honest, I would love some respect for the guy. That would be a complete stab in the heart for a program and a university he cares about.
Hopefully we can take care of him and his staff and have him stay around.

I hope Chip keeps his job. I can’t imagine Chip will be fired this year. He had to rebuild post DTR and did beat USC. UCLA going into the B1G with coaching chaos would not be smart on the Bruins’ part.

Hmmmm... not sure why fans get so riled up on this coaching stuff. In actuality there is zero fans can do, and it's almost the same for the school.
OSU has about reached the limit, probably over, what they can shell out for a HC and football staff. With the next couple years in flux there is no way a raise/extension is a wise financial move.
Secondly, a coaches value? There is no such thing other than what a school's budget and boosters allow. Was Jimbo worth $75 mil? T A&M said so, but no he wasn't. For now JS's value has been reached... at OSU.
Next... if JS values a bigger pay check, for himself & staff, OSU is in no position to compete with big budget schools. And, I'm sorry if JS doesn't value loyalty, commitment, and not abandoning the school that gave him his chance with the situation OSU is in... well, don't let the door hit ya too hard on the way out.
Plus, JS has proven there are very talented assistants with zero HCing experience that can build and sustain a program. Coaches leaving are the way of college athletics. I don't see JS leaving during the transition. But, I'm not going to worry about it either way.
