Stanford has decided to sacrifice money for conference prestige, and lock up a spot in a P4 conference as their absolute top priority, dollars be damned. Personally, I think this is a sound strategy. I believe we should do everything we possibly can to follow suit. I'm convinced this realignment is the beginning of the end of equal conference distribution. Too many schools have now shown a willingness to sacrifice dollars to not be left standing when the music stops, and we should get used to that as a small market school. It's time to accept less money, but still play worthy competition. If we are only going to net $10 million in any Pac West or Pac American Conference, I would rather approach both the B!G and Big12 and ask for membership with that same $10 million payout. All while making very subtle gestures to the army of lawyers waiting on the sidelines ready to pounce if we aren't taken care of. Joining either conference would give it a 6-team western pod, which should be something that either conference would find valuable, to make travel costs more manageable. A guy can dream, anyway.... I'm sure all these avenues have been explored.....at the end of the day we just didn't make the cut. We are being relegated to the MW. It's that simple. Wait, wouldn't the MWC be a "promotion" from no conference at all? And, certainly it is from "starting from scratch"... right? So confusing! 🤣

Supposedly ESPN is also paying travel costs for Cal & Stanford. ESPN sure wants to help out the Bay area.
One thing I don't understand is -IF- OSU & WSU wanted to be aggressive and try to take part of the AAC and part of the MWC, why they haven't done so already.
Only reasons I can think of: 1) They can't without Stanford and Cal as backers. This may be why they've started having conversations with the MW commissioner about merging. 2) They are waiting to see what happens to SMU as they are a potential piece of the puzzle.

How do you propose OSU & WSU, with or without the Bay area schools, do that without a media deal? Being aggressive isn't a very good plan if you have zero leverage or a better alternative to the AAC or MWC's current deals.

According to Barnes, the disposition of Calford was necessary before we were going to pursue a path forward. Once that is resolved the rest will happen quickly

Or they might have one but the numbers might change based upon Stanford & Cal. ESPN has AAC. Knock out AAC, there are slots - plus I'm betting ESPN would throw some paltry money at some more After Dark slots. CBS and Fox have MW. Take out the best of those teams and you can take that deal probably the year after when it's up for negotiations anyhow. Or the wildcard in the room is Apple. They wouldn't have any major players, but again, they only care about subscriptions, not eyes on TV. So maybe they offer a lot less - let's say $10 million base per school, with the same incentives. They might also be waiting for Stanford & Cal. And yes, I don't have the answers to any of these. That's why it's not framed as a fact.

Everyone wants those seven o'clock spots, and Oregon State and Wazzu can fill one each week. Someone will pay us something for that. Whether it will be $10+ million or less remains to be seen. Need to get the Civil War back, as well, on something. Home-and-homes against Washington would also probably help. Those are each like $2 million games per year. And we could potentially keep all of it, as opposed to splitting all of the money with the rest of the Pac-12, like in the past.

Get $2million per game for $24 million per year. Be independent

That loss of revenue and travel would eat up most or all of that $24 million. Plus, we have $3 million in annual debt service we have to pay on the stadium whether we use it or not.

If Cal and Stanford go away and we have to throw in with MWC and AAC - that’s just plain weird - but for me maybe it won’t be all bad.
Daughter got a volleyball scholarship in Florida, where she met a Floridian soccer player and got married… Several years ago now. Wife and I bought a piece of property just over 30 minutes from them, small town about 45 min NW of Orlando. Will build house and move sometime in next couple years. Daughter likes to point out all of the college teams in Florida and I will love the sports… Me - yeah but Oregon State is across the nation from me.
Imagine some kind of merger between remaining Pac-12 teams (OSU and WSU most likely), MWC and AAC. (AAC - heard of most of them, but don’t know them well and schools - to me - not highly regarded…) Oh well, let’s think positive. Probably break down into 3 to 4 subdivisions. There are two of these colleges in Florida (Tampa and Boca Raton) and hopefully the Beavers could play there every few years… This could be good for me.

Funny... when the OP was given more info by the first quote no mention he was joking. And, no where in reading is there a hint of one. I think all the posts referred to were "jokes"?!

This is dragging on forever. Time is running out to make schedules. And if the ACC for some odd reason doesn't take these three, we'll have to wait again while Stanford figures out another Plan B. And reading Cal message boards, their fans are delusional on their worth...so they may not even be a part of anything new.
