Is that Cal and Stanford haven't figured out what they're going to do.

Two of the “smart” schools. I thought the same.

Could Furd going Ivy or independent. They are probably too cool to get dirty with the peasants.

Stanford’s 38 billion dollar endowment buys them a little time and a lot of options

Is that Cal and Stanford haven't figured out what they're going to do. Stanford has their scandal to deal with. I think California has leadership issues. Neither is in a great place to be very proactive.

Could Furd going Ivy or independent. They are probably too cool to get dirty with the peasants. The Ivy League is not going to expand. It doesn't need Stanford, would never emphasize athletics that much or spend the money on travel. Stanford can't survive financially as an independent. Their football program has no national value for any network and their basketball program doesn't generally draw more than 3-4K. IDC how big their endowment is, they cannot sustain losing $30-40 million a year on athletics. At some point they have to realize that in the TV rights game, nobody cares about Fullbright Scholarships or how many Rhodes Scholars you have. Time to eat cake with the rest of us in steerage.

Ivy is an obvious non-starter. #1 Ivy League football is non-scholarship, non-playoff Div1 FCS. #2 Yes, Ivy League schools are wealthy. But do they want to be flying 3 time zones each way to play in Palo Alto? Highly doubtful.

Folks... you need a media deal to go independent. And, that'd be football only, as ND is.
You need a conference for the remaining sports. Also, Stanford has a huge "academic & facilities" endowment. It's not necessarily for athletics.
They proposed a huge athletics cut 2 years ago due to funding. Only an outcry from the alums & athletes reversed that decision.
Their Trust is run with a very tight academia based fist.

For me the biggest surprise is that Barnes and Crow from ASU both said that the Pac was close to signing the deal.

For me the biggest surprise is that Barnes and Crow from ASU both said that the Pac was close to signing the deal. Maybe the defectors are just better poker players? I think they held out as long as possible, even told their new conferences, if they didn't sweeten the deal, they were going to sign. Just used us as leverage would be my guess. Led Barnes and others down the proverbial garden path.

What cards did Barnes have to play? His only hope was Pac12 survived. We learned that from his statement of support after Colo left. I suppose he could have called their posturing, assuming he figured it out, and not shown up for the final meetings. But I don't see how that gets us anything.

Led Barnes and others down the proverbial garden path. The deal was not sweetened. The Big 12's offer was always the same, the same money as existing members. The Big Ten knew it could get UO and UW on the cheap. And it did. After paying for the travel, they will be lucky to clear $20-25m on the deal.

Is that Cal and Stanford haven't figured out what they're going to do. Well, when your mascot is a tree.....................never mind What wood they do? Leaf the conference? I think they would be board in the MWC. They are still deciding on where to place their roots and don't want their program out on a limb anymore than anyone else.
