What cards did Barnes have to play? His only hope was Pac12 survived. We learned that from his statement of support after Colo left. I suppose he could have called their posturing, assuming he figured it out, and not shown up for the final meetings. But I don't see how that gets us anything. I agree. I was referring to the other five schools telling Barnes and others they were on board and would sign, while telling the Big10 and Big12 they wanted more concessions. I know it has been said the deal was always the same, I thought I heard hole got an additional 10mil on the side of the deal for travel.

They may have gotten some money from later on in the deal advanced to them now to help offset travel costs. That amount will be reduced from further payouts, with interest I assume. So five years down the road, when the cost of travel has increased, they will get less money.

And perhaps the biggest downside is the amount of travel all the athletes have to do. Basketball, baseball, vollyball, softball, and soccer. I don't know about schedules for lacrosse, golf, tennis, and beach vollyball. It mostly wont affect track and CC. But all the athletes got sold down the road to trade a football game against California for one against Maryland. If I was a high D1 baseball or vollyball recruit I would not even return a phone call from tsdtr.

So what we are saying, one or more airlines under the table agreed to pay the Big12, Big10 to make this happen?

Btw, one of the O-live sports reporters mention the will now be renovating their North side. All Phils hand in it of course.

And Seattle has Sea Tac and the Los Angels schools have large airports so I could still see recruits returning calls for the other 3 (Wash. , usuck and fucla) based on much easier connections and straight flights out to Maryland.

The majority of sports are f%#*ed but the football team will just take charter jets out of Eugene's airport......

Does Nike keep pouring money into that HOLE without his personal whims to do so?

Does Oregon stay Oregon once Phil is gone. I believe that Oregon moved primarily because Phil is not doing so well.

Seems very short sighted, if not straight up dumb.

Seems very short sighted, if not straight up dumb. I believe that it was an attempt to be longsighted. I think that they took less money right now to try and make more money in 7+ years. And Oregon also believes that it is in their interest to be on regular television more often, instead of Apple.

There are other cards to play now in conjunction with the loyal, non butthole remnant Pac 4 members. See the “Communicate” thread.

Point taken, but the Apple thing is still just a thought, and very possibly the way of the future anyway. Also, in 7 years Phil is MAYBE still involved, and by then the BIG has probably realized that Oregon and it's "brand" are a paper tiger, and not worth the trouble they add to their equation. I also think the sport declines from here. Who's to say the whole thing isn't unravelling right when these bigger payouts are supposed to be taking place?

So, this could be not a great long-term play for Oregon on two separate fronts. The ACC may still come out looking like geniuses at the end of the day, locked into contracts for the next 13 years. No one else can say affirmatively where they will be in 13 years. They can guess and project, but they do not know. ACC has taken the bird in the hand. And it might be a smarter long-term play then chasing those birds that are still in the bush. I also think that things may unravel from here. But I have been saying that for almost a decade, and it is still getting more and more stupid.
