Laif Palmer is a promising young pitching prospect out of Golden, Colorado HS. He is committed to Oregon State and was recently drafted by the Texas Rangers. As usual speculation is rampant - College or Pro, and what will it take to sign him?
RE: Texas Rangers draft and Laif Palmer:
Reworked my notes and massaged the numbers again today.
1. The MLB facts we are working with set the Rangers draft pool money at $9,925,300.
2. The Rangers drafted 18 prospects in '23. They have signed 13 of those selections.
3. MLB/Rangers have disclosed 8 of those 13 signing bonuses - totaling $10,307,900
4. The 5 signed prospects with "undisclosed" signing bonus amounts were drafted in the 12th-13th-14th-15th and 18th rounds.
5. The 5 unsigned prospects were selected in the 11th-16th-17th-19th and 20th rounds.
We know Texas has exceeded their pool, but by how much? Now is when we need to make some assumptions - What would be a fair and reasonable bonus amount to assign those 5 prospects drafted with unknown bonus amounts? The $150,000 signing is common in the late rounds of the draft but Texas has several that really don't fit that scenario.
Example A: The 11th round selection is OF/IF Maxton Martin, an Oregon commit from Kennewick and the number 1 ranked OF in the state of Washington with considerable skills. I suspect it will take more than the $150,000 bonus offer to counter an opportunity to play in the PAC and be buoyed by 3 years of UO collective/NIL money. There is a $572.000 signing in the 11th round this year.
Example B: The 17th pick is Jake Brown, a LHP and the number 1 ranked prep in Louisiana. Will the $150k offer entice him to forego his LSU career and Tiger NIL riches?
My contention is that Texas will spend millions (probably in the $12-13mil range) in this draft if the sign everyone. We won't know until all the numbers are available, but what is amazing is they may sign 17 players for half of what they paid their first round pick, Florida OF Wyatt Langford.
The Ranger's Draft:
1 (4): Wyatt Langford, OF, Florida -- $8,000,000 (Pick value $7,698,000)
