Meh, it's all speculation, but it sounds like there was something to be corrected staff-wide that somehow gave ASU an advantage.

This is a weird thread. Not speculation. Just READING it is all the proof one needs. Slow OSU sports day, I suppose.

unlikely the whole staff was tipping. If anything I think it would we more like what the Astros were doing. Signaling location through a sound after our catcher has set up Location does nothing if you don’t know what pitch is coming. Plus, most college pitchers don’t hit the location all the time. I don’t know why Parker said anything, but there’s a lot of wild speculation in this thread. location matters a lot. If I know location I can eliminate pitches. If the catcher sets up inside, you are not get a changeup and mostly likely not a breaking pitch. Same if the catcher has a high target, no changeup, no breaking ball. If I only have to cover one quadrant on the strike zone, it makes me a much better and more aggressive hitter.

Also, you can certainly throw breaking balls down and in. The high target would be helpful, but we don't have a lot pitchers who are intentionally throwing high strikes. Dorman likes them down in the zone.

Hope he's right, but what if we blow a lead vs. Arizona this weekend? Certainly could happen. By saying that he "meant to be cryptic" is 100% implying that some sort of external force other than "these things jsut happen" led to us blowing leads in 3 consecutive games. By not expounding on what that is, it opens it up to any number of scenarios. Maybe he was just covering for the coaches/staff......trying to blame some mystery factor for the collapse of the bullpen. Who knows, but I'd rather he just said "it was a bad weekend, an uncharacteristic weekend, and I don't think we'll see anything like that again" and move on.
Mike Parker has done a lot for Beaver Nation.
But my grandpa was good driver for sixty years, and then he wasn't anymore. We didn't let him keep driving because he avoided that deer in '84 and got us home safely during the ice storm of '08.
I used to really enjoy listening to MP, but lately....it hasn't been the same. I actually would've preferred if we had kept Josh Worden around. I thought he was going to be someone I could enjoy listening to for decades to come.

I good hitter can take a peek if they desire. Poor catchers give away their setup early. Most set up neutral and slide toward "1" or "7" after the pitch begins his motion where the hitter can't peek. And, knowing location without the pitch is useless in many cases! You think to look inside and the pitch is a slider that starts at "1" and ends at "5"... you look pretty foolish trying to cover one "quadrant" (plate coverage is rarely, if ever, described by quadrants).

Question--How does a team get beat 20-0 on Monday average 11 runs for 3 games less than a week later., One thing that I did notice that ASU batters took very few strike 3 calls. It was hard to see us blow 8 runs of a 10 lead in game 1, a 6 run lead in game 2 and a 5 run lead in game 3. I think that the baseball norm of having your best reliever as the closer and 2nd best as the setup guy is wrong just like having your best hitter batting clean-up. The key situation is often prior to the 9th inning and that is when you need the out. I understand your thinking, but in some cases, like when we are visitors, we don't get another chance to come to the plate. So saving the closer for the 9th, I think, can be very important. An out in the 9th is worth a bit more than an out in the 6th, in my opinion. But I'm sure this varies from situation to situation.

Always room for speculation following a radical departure from 37 games of pitching effectiveness. What isn't open for speculation, is the reality that we threw a lot of pitches right down the pipe and ASU bareled up on many of them.
ASU had a disappointing year in 2022, hit the transfer portal hard with 10 new players (Keashall, McClain, er.al.) and now sits on top of the PAC-12 standings with a 28-12 overall record. D1 Baseball thinks the "hyper competitive" Willie Bloomquist is a viable candidate for "College Coach of the Year".

Just so we are all on the same page as to how pitches are called now: From the linked article: "It’s being replaced by a coach in the dugout pressing numbers into a keypad corresponding to different pitch types and transmitting the information to the mound. A vibration in the wristband lets the pitcher know the call is in. The technology, Game Day Signals, was developed by a small Virginia software development company and approved for use for the first time this season by the NCAA. The impetus was to speed up pace of play, which has been a concern across the sport. It also eliminates the ability of the opposing team to steal signals... Malay said it costs $3,000 to $4,000 for a full package, which includes one coach’s keypad and 10 player wristbands. apnews.com/article/technology-sports-baseball-college-sports-software-development-7489aef16f4bdbeefc3d5f6ea67d8185

A caller to the show asked how our entire pitching staff could collapse at the same time. Parker replied “ I am not free to say but I guarantee that weekend will be an outlier, and yes this is meant to be cryptic “. Very strange statement. Was he implying that ASU were stealing our signs ( banging on trash cans) or that the staff partied too much. What's the likelihood that virtually our entire pitching staff would just happen to crater at the same time vs ASU and, especially, this late in this season? Certainly could happen I suppose, but it's also possible that, once again, our (IMO) not-ready-for-prime-time coaching staff was a day late and a dollar short with their in-game management decisions (e.g., the MC/Dorman team has yet to figure out how to use the short game in college ball and Dorman's pitching decisions are, too frequently, "puzzling"). And IF the 'Devils coaching staff was stealing signs throughout the series, I would not be shocked if our coaching staff was slow to figure out what was happening. MC/Dorman can certainly recruit...but they need to bone up their on their in-game strategizing and decisions. I know several here will go bananas that I would dare to openly criticize our coaching staff, but I call like I see it. Nevertheless, I should also add that I WOULD LOVE TO EAT CROW and somehow find that I'm totally wrong about MC/Dorman not being among the sharpest knives in the PAC12 baseball coaching drawer.

If nothing else, you are predictable. As are you. I will say that this board is indeed "predictable" in the area of any type of criticism of any OSU coach deemed to be "The One".. or whatever moniker you want to give. Then, when the program stubs it's toe the shortcomings/criticisms suddenly become more and more acceptable, and in some cases the common thread during/after games and in the off season. Every coach/staff has issues and shortcomings. I remember a very short time ago that ANY criticism of the WBB program and staff was strictly taboo and those mentioning such things were scolded and belittled. Then, well... two seasons of slippage and look at that board! MC and staff are still college ball "rookies". They make a ton of questionable decisions when compared to some traditional ideas. But, they are in the "new breed" category where analytics may take precedence over "gut". Plus, IMHO the game of baseball itself offers far more instances to have coaching input effect games and hence be questioned. Overall the past two seasons have led to postseason berths. To me, that a bit of a low bar. I mean 64 teams make it and at this stage of the program for OSU not to be one of the top 64 teams is unthinkable. Now the selection process can be a factor, but OSU should be strong enough to eliminate most of that issue with their play on the field.
