For what it's worth, Adley playing football will always be the trivia that surprises a lot of people. Everyone knows him as a baseball player.
I say we name the home plate area Rutchman's Home.

I don’t like baseballsssss, but the justification for Adley being a football star is stupid. He played one year and kicked off a few times. He may have turned into an excellent kicker, but he didn’t play long enough and was not our regular FG kicker. Focus should be on how good of a baseball player that he is. Wilky’s novel length post does not prove he was a legendary kicker. The point is...he was soo damn good for Oregon State athletics that putting his name in a place of maximum exposure would be appropriate. Any opportunity to cross promote our baseball program with other sports would be a good thing. One last thing...when Adley came out for football he was given a scholarship by the football program. When he dropped football for his sophomore year he lost his football scholarship. The baseball program had already allocated all of their scholarships. The MVP of the college world series in 2018 was a non scholarship player. Never a peep from the kid or anyone else about his personal financial sacrifice. Adleys participation in the football program is intertwined in his time on the OSU campus. His participation in two sports and the cooperation amongst the two athletic programs represent a number of good things about OSU athletics.

Should we also retire Terry Baker's number for basketball? Should we put Dallas Buck's name on the football field as well? Or maybe we put Ken Simonton's name on the baseball field (oh crap that won't work.....he has the same number as Adley) All those players played more than one sport at OSU (for at least a short-time....very short for Simonton) You don't honor them in the sport they didn't receive the accolades in. (Excluding Terry who played in the Final Four)

Suppose an anonymous donor showed up with $5mil and wanted the 5 yard line number changed to J5P for civil war games, do you do that?

Why would Judas Priest want the 5 yard line on Civil War day? Only accept if they play the halftime show. That would be one hell of a show! The dulcet tones of JP were frequently heard by the neighborhood as I drove through.. Got a ticket on base (Camp Pendleton) for having the music too loud while JP was playing. Was shocked to learn that Joan Baez wrote Diamonds and Rust.

Someone help me. When was Terry Baker's #11 retired? Like 1999 or was it earlier in the 90s? It certainly was not 1966. And that dude both put Oregon State on the map and basically engineered the invite into the Pac-8. Comparisons between Baker and Rutschman are comparing apples to oranges in so many ways.
The last time that I checked, the only athlete, who has a statue at Oregon State is Dick Fosbury, because he revolutionized a global sport. Once Baker gets his statue, we can talk about Rutschman.
Talking about retiring Rutschman's #35 in 2023 is slightly less ridiculous than talking about retiring Simonton's #35 in 2005 but only slightly.
Let's give it a couple of decades and come back to this.
Rutschman was awesome in 2018. Baker was otherworldly in 1962-1963.

It's just not identified as Mickey Riley. There was a Joy Selig statue outside of the gymnastics practice center for a very long time. I think it has been moved down to the new practice center. Retired officially or not, I don't think any OSU football player has worn # 11 since the 1970s.

They moved the Joy Selig sculpture? I thought that it was just gone. That's my bad.

If so, my statement begins to look more correct.

Football debates aside, Baker's name is on the Valley Center for his college exploits - Adley has already far outdistanced him as a pro (Baker was never a pro quarterback, would have been a much better wide receiver imo), and so his name belongs up at Goss in a very prominent place for his college success.

You retire OSU #s for their careers at OSU. Zip to do with any pro career! The pro career successes hopefully come with giving back. If stature in the pros and community AC should have been so honored long ago. What about GP. Jerseys are one thing, naming facilities or places is far different. We all understand what Adley did here. But, typically such honors are well removed from their time at a school.
