You know a coach whether a head or assistant looks alot better if you have a talent like Caitlin Clark playing for you.

Yeah... last time I looked she was averaging like 33pts & 12 assists in the tourney. Question who watch more wbb outside the Pac12: How is Boston ever in the talk of best player in the country? She's limited, slow and a 12 & 9 player. Anyway...

I always thought Boston plays like a bull in a china shop, somehow she manages to get a lot of gift fouls. I'm not a fan of hers.

If Coach Devan's primary job is to teach technique and position and other basic fundamentals of the game - - then it really doesn't matter what her "engagement" with the players is.... Her job description is evaluated by how well she teaches and coaches during the Monday-Thursday practice sessions...And, of course, by how much the players improve and benefit from her coaching...
Did you ever watch The Great Wooden coach a game during his final 15 years? He looked like a visitor to the bench.... He once said something to the effect "If they haven't learned what I want them to learn before the game starts, there's not much I can do about it after the game begins..."
90% of coaching is done on the practice court. No fans. No TV. Game-time coaching is the other 10%. But much of game-time coaching is simply repeating and re-playing what was drilled in practice during the week.
That's why it is so freakin' hard to know the value of an Assistant Coach if you don't have insider information. Their work is done before the game not during the game.
Cheer-leading is not coaching...Engagement is not coaching. We'd all be the wiser if more fans, and more TV commentators, knew that - - and then openly acknowledged it.🏀
All this crap about "What did you say during the timeout to spark the 9-0 run" is for Rudy fans. GO BEAVS!!

Ive never seen a college team practice. I sat behind the bench (for the first time) for two OSU games at the MGM Arena in Tinkle's first year. What amazed me was 2/3 of what the coaches did was the same as coaching 4th graders. "Good effort," "keep it up," "your next shot is going in" and so forth. There was an occasional "number 20 is going to feint a drive and then shoot a 3, be ready." There was a few offensive sets called - but hardly any X and O type stuff.

Aleah certainly has an interesting job title at Duke, suggesting she is learning the ins and outs of recruiting without being allowed to officially recruit and playing a role in player development without actually being a coach. Personally, I would love an Aleah hire, but I'm not sure this is the best move for her career at this time.....but maybe it is. If I hear she is the hire, I'd be happy with that move. Director of Recruiting and Player Personnel. Sounds to me that she is on the fast track to learn the intricacies of recruiting and managing staff. I'm not sure why you think she is not recruiting? The other part is player personnel not players. Director of Recruiting and Player Development (not personnel) is what I understand is her official title. When I say 'not recruiting' she is likely not permitted to take part in recruiting off campus, which would be limited to the Head Coach and the three assistant coaches, of which she is not one. Her role in recruiting would be organizational and a great way to learn the ropes without actually being allowed to fully recruit as the coaches can.

You forgot the part about how the refs conveniently ignored almost all of the fouls she committed, on both O and D. To me she will need to improve a lot to be effective in the WNBA.

Do you understand what "off campus" means? ie can you call them, but just not physically visit them/watch them play in person? Can't find anything on that.

This doesn't answer your question, but I ran across this a while back, and this discussion brought it back to mind. According to this article, Division 1 WBB will be allowed to add two additional coaches for 2023/2024, although those two additional coaches will not be allowed to recruit off campus. Does this mean Oregon State will actually have 3 openings this summer, or fall? Is this something Oregon State can even afford to do? I guess if you are going to compete, you may feel you need the two additional coaches just to keep up. I have no answers here, but I'm very curious about this, and what it means. Does this just mean that people like Aleah at Duke and Ely at Oregon State become official coaches instead of their current designation which sits somewhere outside the 'official' coach realm. www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/35428728/ncaa-increase-number-coaches-multiple-sports

Five assistants for a 12- or 13-player team. Ridiculous.

Raegan has given credit to Coach Deven for helping her develop both offensive and defensive skills around the basket.

Five assistants for a 12- or 13-player team. Ridiculous. In the P5 the Beavs have one of the smallest staffs I've seen. No GAs and a couple student managers who just manage stats in game. Jason, the trainer, does ALL player care in-game and Jeff Macy does all of the warm up work. Most P5 teams have at least a couple GAs and student managers who are really active on game day with warm ups, player care, and all the other stuff. Nearly 1/1 ratio of staff to player.
