Apparently I didn't word it correctly. I hope she isn't the sacrificial lamb. This doesn't seem like a realistic worry. I really doubt CR needed to fire an assistant to prevent Barnes from firing him instead. I also have to chuckle at the 'butting heads', and the inference that CR is thin-skinned if he can't get along with someone with a different opinion. Huth has been in the program for 2 years, and if they consistently can't see eye-to-eye, you'd probably want to move on as a hiring manager (and frankly as an employee as well). I found Huth an odd fit in general from the original hire - she spent 7 years with UCLA followed by an HC gig that had a similar record to this year's team. Her mentor at UCLA in close Close has a defensive philosophy is basically the inverse of Rueck's. Rueck's rosters would be a swinging gate defensively playing UCLA's defensive style, so that's probably not the debate - I sure hope not. Regardless, I assume nobody knows if CR didn't like to hear Huff's perspectives because they differed from his, or because they were simply bad ideas. But unless you are going to give Huff credit for UCLA's success on the court (of whom we often ridicule here for underperforming relative to talent level), I'm not sure there's evidence she has some superior coaching ability/insights to bring to the table. I had hoped she'd bring some of that UCLA-level recruits, and that doesn't seem to be happening. So there's also the strong possibility that this is a needed change to get more value out of that salary rather than some defensive ego move.

Role of 2nd and 3rd assistants is:
1) Discover talent for the recruiting pipeline. Associate head coach validates.
2) Skill development of current players.
2) Scouting for game planning.

If I had to guess, and I do, I would tend to lean towards lack of making headway in recruiting combined with lack of player development in the areas Jenny should have been best at. I tend to agree with those who state that the level of energy may have played a role as well. Maybe we should have got a hint when Ely seemed to be the person who put together the "Elite" event for middle schoolers that was held toward the end of the season. You would think the Recruiting Coordinator would have played a major role in that event, but I didn't see anything that showed that she was. Maybe she was too busy with day to day game planning, etc. I also acknowledge that I may be completely off base. I'd be better off speculating about who takes her place.

Looking forward to seeing who Coach can bring in to complement the current coaching/recruiting staff.

Note that this is probably the "easiest" (not trying to sound inhumane about firing someone!) knob that SR has to turn - go get a new assistant. Might make a big difference. I could swear that when we played Washington this year, *their* style of play reminded me a lot of the Beavers when Katie Faulkner was on our staff. I don't know if it could have played out this way, but in my perfect world Katie's husband Derek would have landed on the Beaver men's soccer team as an assistant and she would still be here......
Success and failure of assistants (I would think) can be directly placed on the head coach. Just like we knock Barnes for HC extensions and fails, this one is on SR. I would like to see a high energy, very young, non-SR coaching tree hire of someone who was either a great defender and deadly sharpshooter in her own college career, or a supreme paint player with serious rebounding chops, since those are areas I feel we need some real help in......non-SR coaching tree because I think diversity of thought and approach could also be helpful right about now :-).
Anyway, gives us one more thing to discuss in the off season, though I don't track or know much about potential WBB assistant coaches, so my contributions beyond this post will be meager at best. Go Beavers!

Katie McWilliams (don't know her married last name). Played for her father, long time coach, and was an excellent all-around OSU WBB player. Also experienced the Final 4.

It would be interesting to hear Huth's side of the story as well as Rueck's but neither is going to happen. I think it's pretty safe to say that they didn't always see eye to eye considering Huth is gone after two seasons. I'm just not sure there's enough evidence of underperformance as far as the recruiting to result in a decision to let someone go. Maybe Rueck just didn't like how Huth went about doing her job in that regard.

Syd wants to be an announcer. I think she is still playing as well.

I get excited thinking about Mack, Wiese, or McWilliams, though I have no basis for knowing how they would work out as a coach. I did have the joy of walking with Ellie Mack from the parking lot to Gill for the last game, and she told me she had decided to move on from overseas basketball and was working up her resume to apply for jobs in her field of study, which I think was something like health care administration.

A previous player that has the mind of a coach is Gabby. She would regularly stop practice and make defensive suggestions. According to Rueck most of the time he made the changes.
