2007. So there's that. The fourth conference loss was also Oregon State's seventh overall loss, same as 2023. Although, the 2007 Beavers were already 24-7, as opposed to 12-7.
2007 Oregon State won game three on Holy Saturday to get to 2-4 in conference. Oregon State then beat Portland and California at Goss two games to one and followed that up by winning the next midweek road game (against Portland in 2007) and the next road Pac-12 series (Stanford in 2007) to even the Beavers' conference record at 6-6. Almost all downhill for the next three conference series after that, though en route to that 8-13 conference start in 2007. Oregon State managed to win the last series and then went 11-1 thereafter to pick up National Championship #2.
The last time that a 12-6 Oregon State lost to fall to 12-7 was 2006. The Beavers lost at USC to lose the first road series. Oregon State then went 22-4 thereafter to post a 34-11 record to end the first week of May.
A lot of baseball left, but Oregon State needs to kick it into gear. Another loss in the next three games would put the Beavers into a pre-2004 trajectory.

Isn't it about time for a certain "fan" -- who shall remain nameless -- to suggest that Canham is incompetent and should be replaced?

That is the most since 2010 (seven). Stanford swept Oregon State for the first time since 2010. (Losses 3-5 of the seven mentioned above.) Stanford swept Oregon State at Sunken Diamond for the first time since 2001. 1-5 is Oregon State's worst start in conference since 2000 (swept by UCLA at Goss and lost two-of-three down at Packard). That 2000 team rebounded to win the next two games at Goss against Arizona to get to 3-5. 3-5 was also the start in 2007 with a split against California after a midweek win against Portland. Oregon State finished the third conference series with a 4-5 conference record in 2007. 12-8 is Oregon State's worst overall start since 2003 (10-10). But 2006 Oregon State started 13-7. The 2006 Beavs won the next three to get to 16-7 before dropping a weekend game against San Francisco to drop to 16-8, which is the 2023 Beavs' next chance to catch back up to 2006. The only team with a worse start than 16-8 in the post-2003 era was 2008, which went 14-10 to start. For completeness, 2003 Oregon State started 13-11.

This post bothered me, because something seemed wrong. And that's that Oregon State's ended 2011 with five straight conference losses. That team was a real Jekyll and Hyde team. Surefire National Seed to having to travel to Nashville after a terrible end to the season. Oregon State rebounded nicely to win the Regional but injuries finally caught up with the Beavers in Nashville. So much pitching to start the year and so little 100% pitching to finish it up.

Not sure which fan but one board owner was calling the season before it started and is calling for MC to be fired on Twitter. That board owner is also saying MC is a head case, Tony Robbins wanna be, and is getting into his players' heads to where the players play timid. He has his followers, but they are turning on him, which is sad and funny at the same time. Baseball is a game of matchups, consistency, and cohesiveness. It seems this season is different than past seasons where if several players are in a slump, there are other teammates who are there to produce and pick the team up with their play making ability; either offensively or defensively. The pitching seems inconsistent, the hitting is sporadic and not streaky, while the defensive miscues seem to come in waves. There isn't just one thing you can say, "Aha! That's the reason for the mental errors and lack of hitting!" This team is trying to figure out how to play cohesively and not meshing talented individuals together to form a team. The player leadership doesn't seem to be there. Forrester could certainly be one of the upper class leaders on this team, but no one seems to have stepped up and owned the leadership role.

On the bright side he's driven off so many posters there isn't much good content there anymore. Team definitely looks like it's going to have a down year and it's not meshing yet. Were loaded with offensive talent but consistency can't be radon through the order if you want to win. Pitching has innings of disaster and brilliance. 6 of our loses are 3 runs or less.

How realistic is the post season for this team? When is the last time OSU missed the post season? 2016 and 2008 were the misses since the first NC run. 2016 was 35-19 but 16-14. More than a few people thought it was a snub. 2008 was 28-24 and 11-13 in conference. To overcome a bad RPI you need 37-38 wins for an at large bid. With a high RPI people get in with 30 pretty often. 2009 37, 2010 32, 2019 35, 2021 37. We have 34 more games and need to win 26 of them to for sure be in without leaving on RPI. We need to defend our home field voraciously for the rest of the season and avoid any sweeps.

I have a song dedicated to the guy you're talking about. I had to change a few lyrics around to make it "fit." Well I was reading angybeavs.com the other night. Somebody wrote a moronic post about Beaver baseball I decided it wasn't gonna do any good to get mad. So I wrote a song about him instead. It goes like this... Were you born an asshole? Or did you work at it your whole life? Either way it worked out fine 'cause you're an asshole tonight. Yes you're an A S S H O L E... And don't you try to blame it on me. You deserve all the credit. You're an asshole tonight. You were an asshole yesterday. You're an asshole tonight. And I've got a feelin' you'll be an asshole the rest of your life. And I was talkin' to your mother just the other night. I told her I thought you were an asshole. She said, "Yes. I think you're right." And all your friends are assholes 'cause you've known them your whole life. And somebody told me you've got an asshole for a wife. Were you born an asshole? Or did you work at it your whole life? Either way it worked out fine 'cause you're an aaaass...hole tonight. source: www.lyricsondemand.com/j/jimmybuffettlyrics/theassholesongthei95songlyrics.html

The Pac12 (2012 was the first post season for Pac12 invites) has never been given less than (4) bids to the tourney. Finishing in the top 4 of the conference and the post season tourney would pretty much assure a Pac12 team a bid. -The 2021 postseason had (6) Pac12 teams, with ASU (33-22/16-14) being the last team in, tied with OSU (37-24/16-14) in conference; -In 2019 Cal finished 4th, and 32-2017-11 made it... ASU 5th with (38-19/16-13) also made it; -UCLA finished 4th in 2018 with 38 overall wins and made it. But, Cal, 5th and (32) wins did not with a 16-14 Pac12 record, (3) games behind 4th; -2017 UCLA again was in as the 4th place Pac12 team with (30-27/19-11). But, 5th place Zona at (38-21/16-14) did not; -The 2016 (5) teams made it and ASU(36-23/16-14) got the last bid over OSU (33-21*/16-14). But, was a weird season as bids were skewed by Utah (26-29/19-11) winning the Pac12. But, "snub" was an easy conclusion as OSU swept ASU @goss, winning the UW series @goss, beating Utah 3 of 4 (neutral and SLC series), although a 6-7 finish didn't help the cause. *OSU site has the record as 33-21 vs 35-19... were there forfeits or 2015 was (6) team bid and every team had 35+ wins and 16+ Pac12 wins. So, however they do it, if OSU can finish at least 4th they should be in... hopefully?!

Arizona State 18-12 36-20 6. Oregon State 18-12 38-18
Arizona State, Oregon State, and Stanford tied at fourth, but Arizona State was on probation and could not accept a Regional invite. Oregon State actually took the Stanford series, but the Cardinal were awarded the Palo Alto Regional. The Beavers had to travel to play in the Baton Rouge Regional, which LSU unsurprisingly won. The seventh-place Pac-12 team was Washington. The Huskies finished 13-17 in Pac-12 play.
2013 1. Oregon State 24-6 45-10 2. Oregon 22-8 45-14 3. UCLA 21-9 39-17 4. Stanford 16-14 32-22 5. Arizona State 16-14 35-20-1
Oregon State, Oregon, UCLA, and Arizona State received invites. Stanford won the weekend series against Arizona State in Tempe. But the Cardinal finished with an RPI of 54 and the Devils finished with an RPI of 24. Oregon State and Oregon received National Seeds. UCLA received a Regional host berth. Arizona State had to travel to Fullerton. Arizona and Washington finished tied for sixth with the Huskies taking the series in Tucson. Washington was ineligible for postseason play due to a losing overall record. Arizona's 42 RPI was not enough to overcome the 15-15 Pac-12 record.
2014 1. Oregon State 23-7 42-12 2. Washington 21-9 39-15-1 3. Arizona State 19-11 33-22 4. Oregon 18-12 42-18 5. Stanford 16-14 30-23 6. USC 16-14 29-24
Oregon State, Washington, Arizona State, Oregon, and Stanford received invites. Stanford won the weekend series against USC at Stanford. And the Cardinal finished with an RPI of 48. The Trojans finished with an RPI of 51. Oregon State received a National Seed. The other four were shipped to other Regional sites. Stanford was the only team to win its Regional but lost to eventual national champion Vanderbilt in Nashville. The six teams above were the only six Pac-12 teams with winning records.
2015 1. UCLA 22-8 42-13 2. Oregon State 19-10-1 38-16-1 3. California 18-12 34-19 4. USC 18-12 37-19 5. Arizona State 18-12 34-21 6. Oregon 16-14 37-23
All six received invites. Washington finished seventh at 14-16 with an RPI of 91. Arizona finished eighth at 12-18 with an RPI of 99. Wazzu finished ninth at 11-19 with an RPI of 117. UCLA received a National Seed. The other five Pac-12 teams were shipped elsewhere. Only the three California teams made it to the Regional Championship Game. The other three Pac-12 teams each went 1-2.
2016 1. Utah 19-11 25-27 2. Washington 17-13 32-21 3. Arizona 16-14 38-20 4. Oregon State 16-14 35-19 5. Arizona State 16-14 34-21
Oregon State's record was 35-19, not 33-21, like what appears on the website for apparently no reason whatsoever. If Washington won one of the final two games, it would have eliminated Utah, and, then, I think Oregon State gets an invite. The Huskies finished with an RPI of 55 but got an invite. Arizona finished with an RPI of 21 and received an invite. Arizona swept Oregon State in Tucson but lost two of three to Arizona State in Tucson. The Beavers swept the Devils. Arizona State finished with an RPI of 43, and Oregon State finished with an RPI of 44. The Beavers finished with a better overall record than Arizona State and Washington, beat both Arizona State (3-0) and Washington (2-1), and finished with a better RPI than Washington. On top of that Oregon State finished one spot behind Arizona State in RPI. There is no justification that is internally consistent, wherein you could say that Oregon State definitely deserved to not be invited. Plus, you look at Stanford being invited with a worse RPI (48) and worse overall record in 2014, Oregon being invited with a worse RPI (55) and worse overall record in 2015, UCLA invited with a worse RPI (51) and worse overall record in 2017, and Washington invited with a worse RPI (62) and worse overall record in 2018. Most of the D1 baseball experts identified the Beavers as the biggest snub. Probably the biggest Pac-12 snub ever. No quotes. Oregon State was SNUBBED!
2017 1. Oregon State 27-3 49-4 2. Stanford 21-9 40-14 3. UCLA 19-11 30-25 4. Arizona 16-14 37-19
Utah finished fifth at 15-15 but did not really have a Regional-worthy overall record. California finished sixth at 15-15 but with a losing record. Washington finished seventh at 14-16 but did not really have a Regional-worthy overall record. Oregon finished eighth at 12-18 but with an RPI of 86 and, so, was not invited.
2018 1. Stanford 22-8 44-10 2. Oregon State 20-9-1 44-10-1 3. Washington 20-10 30-23 4. UCLA 19-11 36-19 5. California 16-14 32-22 6. Arizona 14-16 34-22
California finished fifth at 16-14 but with an RPI of 73. Arizona finished sixth at 14-16 with an RPI of 48. Neither was invited. Stanford and Oregon State were given National Seeds. Washington was shipped to Carolina, and UCLA was shipped to Minnesota.
2019 1. UCLA 24-5 47-8 2. Stanford 22-7 41-11 3. Oregon State 21-8 36-18-1 4. California 17-11 32-18 5. Arizona State 16-13 37-17 6. Arizona 15-14 32-24
UCLA, Stanford, Oregon State, California, and Arizona State received invites. Four of the five teams below Arizona had a losing record. Washington went 28-24, which is not a Tournament-worthy overall record. Arizona was not invited despite an RPI of 47. UCLA was given a National Seed. Stanford got jobbed and was given a #14 overall seed, which was ridiculously-low. Oregon State was also given a #16 overall seed. Arizona State and California were shipped to Baton Rouge and Fayetteville, respectively, and went a combined 1-4.
2021 1. Arizona 21-9 40-15 2. Oregon 20-10 37-14 3. Stanford 17-10 33-14 4. UCLA 18-12 35-18 5. Arizona State 16-14 32-20 6. Oregon State 16-14 34-22
The six teams above received invites. California finished seventh with a 15-15 conference record. But the Bears finished with an RPI of 89 and did not receive an invite. Only ninth-place Wazzu finished with a winning record below California but did not finish with a Regional-worthy overall record and was not invited. Arizona received a National Seed. Oregon and Stanford each received Regionals. Arizona State, Oregon State, and UCLA were each shipped to Texas. Arizona State went 1-2. UCLA went 2-2. And Oregon State was the closest to winning the Lubbock Regional, blowing a five-run lead in game five. Oregon went 2-2 in Eugene. Arizona and Stanford each went to Omaha, but Arizona's coach was checked out and they went 2&Q. Stanford eliminated Arizona but blew a 5-2 sixth inning lead in a basically win-and-you are better-rested in the Championship Series game against Vandy, because NC State ultimately had to pull out of the Tournament, because of COVID-19.
2022 1. Stanford 21-9 41-14 2. Oregon State 20-10 44-15 3. UCLA 19-11 38-22 4. Oregon 18-12 35-23 5. Arizona 16-14 37-23
The five teams above received invites. UCLA received an invite with an RPI of 47 with a worse overall record than 2016 Oregon State. Stanford and Oregon State received National Seeds. UCLA, Oregon, and Arizona were sent to Auburn, Louisville, and Coral Gables, respectively. Many people stupidly cheered on Auburn to beat UCLA and, unfortunately got their wish. Oregon lost to Michigan and were eliminated by Louisville. Arizona had to play the day after Tropical Storm Alex swept over South Florida. The Wildcats lost the opener and so had to win doubleheaders on both Sunday and Monday to win the Coral Gables Regional, but a much more well-rested Mississippi was able to pummel Arizona on Monday afternoon, winning 22-6.
TLDR:
17+ conference wins basically clinches an invite, unless you win 11 or fewer non-conference games. If you finish 16-14, you leave your fate to the committee, who can be wildly and stupidly inconsistent. A worse record than 16-14 is basically a death sentence in the Pac-12. No team has ever received an invite with a worse conference record.
At this point, Oregon State needs to go 16-8 or better in conference to get to that 17-13 or better conference record. Possible but becoming less probable.
