Like the hitting and the new look infield. My concerns is that we haven’t seen a real Friday or even a good Saturday guy. We will when league starts so it’s hard to see if our hitting is sustainable. Also we do not have a Friday guy and barely have a Saturday guy. Sellers on Friday was 90-91 thigh high fastballs all game. He will be backing up 3rd a lot like that. Seems like we have 5 or 6 of the same type guys. 89-92, generic secondary stuff. I think Mitch will have to mix and match the whole year, ride the hot arm and have a quick hook if a guy doesn’t have it. I think the late inning bullpen might be a strength. Brown is proven, Keljo was 96 yesterday day and Hutchinson can give a different look. The challenge might be getting to them. George Klassen for Minnesota pitched against Oregon State on Saturday. Multiple sites have him going in the first three rounds. He is supposed to be able to get his fastball up to 102 mph, which is the draw. The Gophers pretty much threw everything that they could against the Beavs, including the kitchen sink and came up a run short. Klassen started today against St. Louis and gave up three runs before the bullpen took over and gave up an additional 13. I think that I went through Riley Egloff for New Mexico, as well, in an earlier post. He is the son of a well-known......ish ex-MLB pitcher, who subsequently became a pitching coach in the Tigers organization. Egloff has shown that he can pitch in most locations, especially before his coach throws out his arm. In his start against Northern Colorado, he gave up one hit. Liam McCallum is one of the best pitchers out of Australia. He played for Gonzaga last year out of the pen before transferring. Marcos Herrand was one of the best freshman pitchers out of the MEAC last year. Herrand threw 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball against East Carolina in Coppin State's elimination game. I wouldn't say that Oregon State has not faced anybody. Klassen is supposed to be very, very good. Egloff has shown that he can start off red hot below 5,000 feet. McCallum is talented, as is Herrand. As for the rotation, we are in for a lot of games here. 21 games in 32 days starting on Thursday. That is a pretty packed schedule. I am curious to see how Mitchy Slick handles it all.

Didn't see this mentioned here, but the first Coppin State pitcher to come from the pen today, Tim Ruffino, had no right hand. Knowing that, was it okay to bunt with him on the mound?

Baseball wisdom that has stood the test of time.
Velocity will get you drafted. Location will get you to the Show.
And . . . never underestimate the power of velocity. Good secondary pitches are dependent on spin and if you can't bring it, you can't spin it.
Movement is the name of the game.

Jim Abbott got bunted on............a lot. There is a story about one coach in high school that bunted on Abbott eight times in a row. The leadoff hitter reached, but the next seven did not. No bunting after that. Abbott usually threw off the glove on bunts and slow rollers. Maybe it's cringy in high school, but Ruffino should know what he's doing by now. All the best to Ruffino. It's a tough game even with two hands. You don't get diamonds without an unbelievable amount of pressure, and Oregon State can provide it to both players on the team and players on the other teams, as well.

As a crips-rights activist [politically incorrect, I know] --- if he can't field a bunt, he shouldn't be in the infield.

It was a good bunt. A difficult play for anyone to make.
It came at a point when the game was still very much competitive.
The Beavs only bunted that one time, so it wasn’t exploiting his weakness in an egregious manner.
I’m sure he Ruffino is capable of fielding bunts or he wouldn’t be out there.

Big takeaways. Forrester looks quite good at 3rd and Krieg is a natural talented TALL player at 1st. At this point I would start Kane over Dernedde at SS. You feel comfortable making the call for Kane after seeing him against one of the weakest opponents we’ve faced? Dernedde is experienced and is second on the team in RBIs despite not playing in two major blowout games. Dern makes errors all the time and his bat has been worse or equal against every common opponent. I would have had Jaben start over him the majority of last year too. (Hit-AB-BB) Game 1 Kane 1-2-0 Dern 0-3-0 Game 2 Kane 1-2-1 Dern 1-4-0 Game 3 Kane 1-4-0 Dern 1-4-0 Game 4 Kane 1-4-0 Dern 1-4-0 Don't really have the numbers but Kane has had longer AB showing better patients and forcing pitchers to work. Considering those are Kane's first 4 starts at this level and Dern has like 50 you would want the SS of a premium program to have a better bat. The biggest issue is fielding at this point. Dern has 2 errors in 4 games, Kane has zero in 7. Baz has 2 errors in 7 but he bats .400 so he makes up for it. Dern bating .250 would be an improvement. At this point Dern is the biggest weakness in the lineup and Kane has shown he should be given some leash until proven otherwise. Dern has more range but he's going to mess up routine plays and maybe cost us games. We also know what he will likely look like against quality arms, we don't know that at all for Kane.

I find it interesting that you would find fault with Dernedde’s fielding since we know he has proven himself against better teams. Perhaps one could see his early 2 errors as an aberration, maybe brought on by the stress of knowing that there’s a replacement in the wings. We’ll see. I have no problem with Kane, except that his sample size at ss is rather small. It’s likely that he was the cause of Bazzana’s throwing error yesterday since he didn’t get over to 2nd fast enough for the easy flip and force out. So obviously he still has a learning curve and he and Bazzana need to establish a rapport. All I know is that the future looks good.

When was the last time we didn’t have a “stuff” guy at the top of our rotation ? Not sure about stuff guy but this is probably the most unsettled our rotation has been since 2012. That said it was not a bad year at all, just alot of guys involved. Jace Fry Scott Schultz and Dan Child all and ERA under 3 with a combined 14-8 record. Ben Wetzler, Matt Boyd and Tony Bryant had ERA under 4 with an 18-4 record. Taylor Star got credit for a 5-2 record. Our pitching staff is still waiting to get back Ferrer, probably our best arm, and Mundt who was a very nice reliever prior to injury. Until Ferrer is back I'm expecting some rocky starts on Friday and Sunday. I think Kmatz is going to be really good Saturday for us this year but Idk if you would consider him on the same level of our past Friday night greats. He's worked on his arsenal though and has 5 solid pitches and decent low-mid 90s velocity.

Next highest was Dukart with 7. Forrester and Baz, comparable on playing time, had 4. Dern has shown power and a willingness to make contact this year which is a definite improvement. I just don't see enough to justify sloppy play. Dern is a more talented fielder than most of the team but he just doesn't connect that body to focused effort play in and play out. Idk if Kane can yet but if he's not making errors and is batting better let him ride it out until proven otherwise. Dern can always come back in and would hopefully be ready to connect the dots.

When was the last time we didn’t have a “stuff” guy at the top of our rotation ? 2019! We finished the year with Bryce Fehmel as the Friday guy, which is........tough. That wasn't the plan, though. The plan was for Kevin Abel to be the guy, but he got hurt after (during?) he outdueled Alek Manoah. 2016 was kind of the same way with Raz going down during the California series. Finished with Eckert/Shelton/Heimlich, which isn't terrible. Got jobbed out of a Regional. Someone mentioned 2012. But in 2012, we were rolling with Wetzler, Child, and Fry, which is a pretty good rotation, especially with Boyd as the setup guy and Tony Bryant as the closer. 2011 was Gaviglio, Wetzler, and Osich, which was......ok. Both Rodrigez and Susac were out parts of the year. And then Osich went down in the Regional. Gaviglio tired down the stretch and got lit up like a Christmas Tree in Nashville. Wetzler also tired and was held out of the Regional. Even with a ton of rest, he was not back up to form and also got pummeled. How about 2010? In 2010, we were rolling with Waldron, Robles, and Peavey. Peavey would finish as the ace and Gaviglio would finish as the Saturday starter. Gorton and Waldron finished duking it out for the Sunday starts. Gaviglio wound up getting crushed in Gainesville, and Waldron finished off the trip by getting pummeled even worse.

Isn't that standard for the position, though? I mean to lead the team in errors. SS isn't as easy as receiving the throw at 1b. UCLA's ss had 11 errors last year. Sloppy play? Hmmm. I still think we haven't seen enough of Kane against a quality opponent to know if he's ready for the spot. One could argue that, had Dernedde played against CSU, he would have really improved his batting average and fielding percentage. Plus, he and Bazzana have worked together already and are a good combo. Kane isn't in sync yet.
