Then why does the Olympic team train there? The most accomplished Team U.S.A. skier, Bode MIller, trained at a hill smaller than Hoodoo in New Hampshire. He's been atop of the world class. Cannon Mt. Ski Area, not so much. In Mt. Flachelor's defense, Rocky didn't need a world class gym to beat Drago.... Encapsulates the training experience of Oregon State players in money sports, who play most other Power Five schools.

Sugar loaf is one of the premiere US alpine ski race locations. It hosted the 96, 97, 06, 08, 15, 17 and 22 US Alpine Championship. World class skiers rarely train at local resorts past their preteens. Gotta be carefully with smaller too. East coast resorts lack elevation but typically have much longer runs. Hoodoos longest run is a mile, cannon mountains is 2.3. Sugar Loafs longest is 3.5. Bachelor is 4 miles but it's not exactly steep. Careful, Mikaela Shiffrin, born in Vail, trained at a dinky NE Vermont hill, Burke Mountain. She just passed Ingemar Stenmark for all-time World Cup victories. Stenmark, though, won 2 gold medals in the 1980 Olympics at Whiteface. Sugarloaf has all those races because they have the only (safety) approved downhill course in the east. Whiteface held the World University Games in January and last week held the NCAA Championships, won by Utah. Here's the races course from yesterday at Whiteface

She hasn't 'trained' at Burke In well over a decade. She started skiing in Vale until she was like 11. Idk why you guys are beating this OT dead horse. Just look at the team USA bios, they don't train at local resorts to get to that level. Like many sports if you aren't at the best locations with the best coaches by 14 you are probably are not going to the Olympics.

Hey, I don't disagree with you, I just see an opportunity to push Whiteface out there. The top of Whiteface is at 4386 elevation, with over 3100' of vertical. The base elevation of Hoodoo is 4680'. I do take exception to your stmt " they don't train at local resorts to get to that level" as 2 time Olympic Medalist Andrew Weibrecht, the WarHorse, learned and trained at his home hill, Whiteface.

Yeah but calling white face a local resort is a bit off. It's hosted the Olympics, 4 collegiate championships, 2003 nationals. It's a legit professional venue with some real good race slopes. Comparing anything in Oregon to it is potatos to bananas. Timberline is the closest but it's not a good competition venue, great for training.

In skiing context, length is meaningless without corresponding elevation drop. Kitzbuhl downhil is around 2 miles with about 2,800 foot of elevation drop. Under the right conditions, Oregon has some super fun skiing which is really what most rec skiers are looking for. Advanced skiers looking for long speed carrying runs, big drops, or chutes find it lacking. None of our resorts offer world class skiing, maybe world class accommodations. Some definitely charge world class prices and given the convenience of location plenty are willing to pay versus heading to Whislter, Tahoe, Utah, WY, ID, Montana, Colorado, or event NM let alone France, Italy, or Austria.

Totally, I would never claim that was it venues aren't fun and good for rec, I love Bachelor and it's my nostalgic home. Or atleast it was until it becomes unaffordable, terribly maintained and my body fell apart. Oregon could have some insane world class skiing but we don't develop our wilderness and I'm totally fine with that. Imagine a Super G down the internal bowl of Brokentop! Now that's some drop!!!
