Johnny Hecker is a team captain during coin toss. Don't know about you but I've never seen a punter representing the team as a captain during a coin toss.

If you saw a fan not stand during the anthem at Reser on Saturday, would it bother anyone?

I kind of look at it this way.....it's not like he's turning his back on the flag, or ignoring the playing of the anthem. He's still being respectful in my opinion. I think it's an effective way to voice his displeasure with issues he sees in our country.
Now, on the flip side, it definitely seems like more of the conversation is on how he's protesting rather than what he's protesting. It will be interesting to see if the conversation shifts back to actual issue, or if he's going to be kneeling for the rest of his career.

But a lot of the reason for that is many people in this country don't think what he (now they) is protesting is real, or that its deserved, or some other reason one of many conservative commentators told them they should be irate. I also am amused they think a professional sports game is the wrong forum to protest. These guys are pro-athletes, that's the very forum where they can make a stand with impact. I read today on social media how some now will not watch NFL games anymore...dear lord, really? I wonder if they stopped watching the Olympics. I don't think I've ever not stood for the POA, or the national anthem, of course, my lily white ass IS privileged. Most of my family (prior generations) served in the military, I honor them because I didn't have to, and so far neither have my three sons. But I also don't walk in anyone else's shoes, so I'm not about to tell them what they should and shouldn't do, nor will I be offended how they choose to wield their constitutional rights.

If you saw a fan not stand during the anthem at Reser on Saturday, would it bother anyone? It might bother me a little. People are disrespectful during the national anthem in many ways (talking, hat on, looking at phone, drinking, eating, etc). It depends on if they are intentionally and mindfully protesting something or just being disrespectful. I thoroughly waffle about this whole national anthem thing. It's good if it draws attention to the real issues we have in this country. But the intent of the protest seems to be getting overlooked by the actual method of protest. I wasn't around in '68 and my guess is many of you weren't either wiki article on the topic But to me the current day protests show we haven't gotten very far and have a lot of work to do to get to a point of peace and equality for all.

I was a bit irritated with ESPN. I expected them to cover the Kaep story, but they barely even cut away from him at all during the anthem. They never went back to show the violinist playing after she started. That seems more disrespectful than what Kaep was doing.

That is a fundamental freedom we should all appreciate. You can find it disrespectful all you want, but our soliders went to war and died so that we could live in a country that does not have mandatory patriotism. Fine line between national pride and fascism. As for Kap, his choice must be working, as you can't swing a cat by the tail without finding some median outlet talking about it. and more over, they are talking not just about his action, but about his ACTUAL point... oppression of minorities in America. Like it or hate it, can't say it is not effective.

You should also be irritated with ESPN for making us endure 4 quarters of Chris Berman. I thought it was a cool rendition by the violinist..

You asked for an opinion if it would bother people if someone and Reser didn't stand for the anthem, and I answered honestly. But I don't think it's working. I think it's already losing steam. It quickly morphed in to a chance for everyone to make their own views known, flavor of the day. I also thought his motivation was about police and the treatment of black people, not about oppression of minorities in America. It seems just from this small bit of conversation on it that the message is unclear, muddled, and therefore not effective in a meaningful way. But if it is for you, great!

Man it is really nice to come in here and hear others feel same way as me. At first I was bothered by his stance because I always thought it was a tribute to who died so that we can safely watch football. Then he moved to the knee which I am good with. I applaud him for doing this because he only has things to lose personally by standing up. I am so confused you get a Prez candidate bring up how horrible the inner cities are and then his fans bash Kap for saying the same thing. I am going to vote for this guy but man I can not wrap my head around the serious online hate from supporters forums towards these guys.
I have a unique experience in my younger days getting caught up in the drug war. The drug war is the reason this crap is going on yet no one can fricken say it.
Anyway the Berman comment is on point he needs to retire!!!!

Berman going with pop culture references that are 30-40 years old is always just magical. Way to dust off a Police, Every Breath You Take reference right out of the gate, Chris. Anyone under 30 totally gets your hilarious references from 1983. Bummer you couldn't find a way to get in a Linda Ronstadt song title. You're No Good-> Rams offense maybe? Missed opportunity...
I wanted to stab myself in the eye during the HR derby this year. Back back back back GONE! He hit that one all the way to La Jolla! He hit that to Escondido! That one landed in CARLSBAD! Brilliant! You know your suburbs. Now go away, please take Stephen A Smith with you on the way out.
