So a lot of people on this board got their wish...the freshmen played big minutes (except for Martha). Hansford played 33 minutes and had 12 points on 4-of-8 from the field, all 3-pointers. She also had four rebounds, three fouls and a steal. Blacklock played 27 minutes and had 12 points on 5-of-7 from the field, 2-3 3-pointers. She also had two assists, one steal, one rebound, one foul and one turnover. Gardiner played 29 minutes and had 3 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Beers played 30 minutes and had 11 points and 13 rebounds. So the future looks bright as far as those players are concerned. Here's my concern. Last season Jelena replaced Kennedy in the starting five. I suspect because she made it known she would be entering the portal. Tonight is the second game Talia has not started. Coincidence or ...?

She's obviously not totally healthy and her play just hasn't been all that good. I don't think there's more to it than that, but it's hard to say for sure.

Very close. I hope they stay together. They'll be scary good next year.

I expected a lot more out of Gardiner than her production so far. I thought it was due to lack of playing time but last night she added very little.
Over-hyped or ?. Any thoughts from the group, she looked good the first game or so, since then really nothing.

This loss is again on the coaching staff. Why do we put starting lineups on the floor that result in OSU being down 10+ points at end of Q1? Start the best players (and the future) which are our freshmen & sophomores. Bendu certainly had an off night with 6 TOs. Why Martha only played 4 minutes is beyond me. I really like our young players. They are gaining confidence and starting to play very well. Adlee was playing with confidence and just looked like a natural hooper last night. Made 3's and great mid-range shot making. I am seeing much better defense from all the freshmen. Coach playing TvO at the PG position is another massive coaching error. TvO is not a PG, and it shows every time with Turnovers, stagnant offense, and the other 4 players standing around. TvO can be a huge contributor in a different role, but not PG.
Coaches need to flip the switch. Start the 4 freshmen with either Bendu or Martha at the point. Subs off the bench are the sophomores & juniors. Get it together coach!

I think Gardiner works very hard to get open at the 3 and 4 position, which ever one she is playing at the time, but isn't receiving the ball as often or as quickly as she needs to to be effective. Team passing lately has been relatively slow and sloppy, and our posts-forwards are being double and tripled teamed. I'm not too concerned about Gardiner because I've seen her play really strong and she has shown that she can play the game well. I think that all of the freshmen continue to be a work in progress, and we are beginning to see their potential as they all get more playing time. Now to find that point guard, although I would like to see Martha on the floor more to see what she can (or can't) really do.

Yes to all that you stated!
While it probably is not fair to Bendu to give Martha a lot of her minutes, the fact is this season is "done". There is very little chance of salvaging it.
Play Martha as many minutes as possible-it will give us a picture of what she can (or cannot) do. Also it should give her tremendous incentive to improve her skills in the off season.
Also SR needs to insist on Assistant Coaches and players having a clear plan of player development off season for each player and insist that it be followed.

But as any losing team says” It’s a rebuilding year.
They are definitely gonna peek at the PAC-12 Tournament.
Notice I said “peek”, not “peak”.

Well, I did like that he didn't mess with the Yeaney and four freshmen lineup until he had to sub in for Beers when she fouled out. You watch a team like Washington play and the difference in execution on offense was just vast until the fourth quarter. I also watched as much as I could of Arizona-Utah and Stanford-USC tonight. I'm not saying any of those five teams are perfect but man, they just seem to be so much more well prepared, etc. grayman,
In regards to SR's coaching performance this year it appears that "he is just mailing it in" as the phrase goes.
Speaking of beers, I'd like to give the academy award for FLOPPING to Daniels who raised it to a new level. I've seen people shot that didn't have the blown away action of some of her performances.

I don't think she's overhyped. She actually didn't have a bad game at all, she just didn't score. I thought her defense was good for the most part. I think it's down to lack of on-court experience compared to her teammates. She definitely is still early in the process of being a freshman and learning the process. She'll be fine.

Am I way off base with my premise that the player development (off and on season) aspect of the program appears to be sadly lacking compared with this group of assistant Coaches compared to the staff of say three years ago?
I watch Jelena after 3 full years in the program still lower the ball to waist level (or worse lower it and dribble) when she receives a pass. She is still unable to establish a solid position in the low post without being pushed around. Where is the development? I watch TVO still dribble almost exclusively with the right hand and has not developed a cross over move, or a step back three point shot. Where is the player development?
I am sure others can add their own specific examples but I believe SR needs to (a) insist on more performance in this area from his assistant coaches or (b) replace some or all of the assistants.
This decline has been steep and lengthy. It is not going to get better by "wishing it away".
Go Beavs!

While Jelena does bring the ball down, she has definitely improved overall as a player. I think the lack of player development is difficult to gauge with most of this team because Yeaney and Aaron are new transfers and there's five freshmen. I wouldn't say the freshmen have shown a lack of development so far. TVO would be the player that stands out the most in this area. She definitely hasn't improved her ballhandling. Her passing is all over the map but I think it's more about making bad decisions than an actual lack of skill. It's up to Rueck and the staff to develop the players but the players have responsibility in this process as well.

I have lived in Spokane for the last 10 years (prior to that the Portland area most of my life) and had the opportunity in person and on TV to watch the Gonzaga women's team play.
The contrast in both the offense and defense organization and execution between the Zags and the current Beaver teams is striking and disheartening if you are a Beaver fan. I am convinced the OSU talent level is comparable but that is where the comparison ends.
I believe that every team in the PAC12 women's league is better organized and efficient on offense than the Beavs .
Once again, where is the Coaching? Yes, as you said, the players have responsibility as well. However many players have now come and gone over the past few years of decline in the program. The constant has been SR who mantra now seems to be "almost winning"!

I see player development and team execution as two separate issues. Player development is about each player individually, how they improve their skills, etc. Yes, that fits into how a team plays but each player has to be able and willing to improve. How well the team executes the offense and defense is way more on the head coach and staff. More than a few times this team has looked completely befuddled on offense, even with simple things like moving without the ball or making the right pass. Defensively, the poor 3-point defense has stood out. I think the defense is OK for the most part other than that area. There are breakdowns at times, though. It's interesting to note how well the offense played when four freshmen were in with Yeaney. My guess is most of the problem in this area has been Rueck constantly looking for effective combinations and the lack of consistent play by TVO and a few others. No go-to scorer and no point guard have just been killers.
