So Ralph's final season and GP's final were the swan song for the MBB program, and a few years later, we hit bottom, never to recover. That didn't take long. What a sad and unfortunate story. Probably a lot of reasons, but I'd say back in the 90's, OSU didn't really care about MBB program. They were living off the shadow of Ralph, hoping, maybe Eddie or Ritchie could bring it back to respectability. Nope, that never happened. I don't like the looks of the future of OSU MBB program in 2023 going forward. I figure there always have been at least some people with high expectations who basically are looking for almost any reason to get out. Back in '85 or so Ralph had a 12 win season. I don't know how much the attendance took a hit, but there were letters to the editor in the Oregonian sports section calling for Ralph's dismissal because he's "a dinosaur", "the game's passing him by", and "I'll never buy season tickets for as long as he's here". Next season, Gary Payton joined the team and Ralph could retire a few years later in glory. Gary's graduation and Earnest Killum Jr's passing really took a toll at the time. Just 1-2 players can turn a 12 win team into a 22 win team, and vice-versa. I can’t readily find attendance stats from those years, it'd be interesting to see exactly how directly attendance correlated with win/loss record in those days. If it correlated season by season, or maybe with a bit of a trailing correlation, there's a cance a couple good seasons could turn attendance around again.

There was a couple of other issues also with Ray Ross and Canaan Chatman transferring out to Portland and the saga with Chad Scott. All of those factors hurt in the early 90's.

Thank you for the insightful comments RE: the history of Beaver MBB. It's stirring a lot of memories and I'm learning things about the program from those who could only know what they know from first hand knowledge of living in the time of Beaver MBB greatness. With that said, I will never get complete closure on the Lamar shocker and Rolando Blackman game-winning shot. I still remember being stunned (and the pain!) like it was yesterday.

Didn’t Chatman and Ross end up helping Portland to a rare tourney appearance?

We have a player now that has (nearly) tripled and may end up quadrupling the wins on this year’s team. Without Pope, I believe this is another 3 win team.

I expect Pope is going to be back channeled really heavily in the upcoming months. I'm hoping he really likes it here. If we can keep the younger kids playing major minutes right now this could a really decent team going forward.

Didn’t Chatman and Ross end up helping Portland to a rare tourney appearance? Yes, they did. No, Chatman and Ross graduated the year before. That 1994-95 Portland team was the first Portland team that played in the 1995 West Coast Conference Championship Game, though. Gonzaga won the West Coast Conference Tournament and lost to Maryland in the Tournament. After Chatman and Ross graduated, Portland played in the 1996 West Coast Conference Championship Game against Gonzaga and won. Portland lost to Villanova in the Tournament. Portland's only other Tournament appearance was in 1959. Portland never finished better than third in the West Coast Conference in any other season other than in 1994-1995 and 1995-96.

I don't like the looks of the future of OSU MBB program in 2023 going forward. Dutch Baughman hired Pat Casey to lead the baseball team and Mike Riley to lead the football team. Two-for-two. But Baughman hired Eddie Payne to lead the basketball team. Two-for-three. Scott Barnes hired Jonathan Smith to lead the football team and Mitch Canham to lead the baseball team. Two-for-two. The team looks much improved after last year. Inconsistent but much improved. Hopefully, that continues on this year. With the right team, Tinkle has shown that he can cobble together a six- or seven-game winning streak at pretty much any time and against pretty much any opponent. I never count a team led by someone like that out. Eddie had one great recruiting class, but couldn't build off of that. Corey Benjamin,Nate Knight,Carson Cunningham(huge loss) J.B. Bickerstaff,Vaden,Marshall, etc. Sadly it never stayed together. The beginning to the end was the hire of Jimmy Anderson. Not head coaching material(went to lots of practices) and the culture Ralph built was waning. Had some talent but couldn't make them play well together...Ray Ross,Brent Barry,Mustofa Hoff,Scott Haskin,Canaan Chatman,Kareem Anderson,Earnest Killum(RIP) and others.
