Brett Maher missed his first 4 XPs of the playoff game vs TB tonight. Also missed his last XP in the final game of the regular season. 5 in a row over two games.

It was hard to watch. I immediately thought of the LSU game.

Knowing Serna a little bit, my guess is he feels bad for the guy. Kickers stick together.

Not to defend the kicker, but I keep hearing this on sports radio. They fail to mention that the ball was only moved back to the 15 yard line for the XP attempt 8 years ago. That is one of the reasons that it never has happened. It still should be fairly easy....but it is not the gimme it used to be.

Still, missing 4 XPs in a season already puts you in the bottom 1/4 of kickers in "modern" times. He missed 5 in a row going back to last week. Brutal.

In the last year of kicking with the goalposts in the front of the end zone 1973, NFL kickers missed 18 XPs - a 97.7% success rate (equivalent to 9/10 yd FG) In the first year the goalposts were moved to the back of the end zone 1974, NFL kickers missed 63 XPs - a 92.1% success rate (the first year of the equivalent 19/20 yd FG) In the last year of kicking from the 2, with goal posts at the back of the end zone 2014, NFL kickers missed 8 XPs - a 99.3% success rate. (equivalent to a 19/20 yd FG) In the first year of kicking from the 15 (2015), NFL kickers missed 72 XPs a 94.2% success rate. (equivalent to a 32/33 yd FG) Some other fun facts: Total number of successful 50+ yard FGs in 1974: 4 Total number of successful 50+ yard FGs in 2014: 94 Total number of successful 50+ yard FGs in 2022: 154 Kickers have been getting better, and better, and better.

I heard today that Maher has the most 60+-yard field goals in NFL history.
It's all about technique. If his hips rotate through too early, or something else goes wrong, he'll pull or push the ball and 32 yards is far less forgiving than 18.

Ticky-tack, but the NFL had the goal posts at the back of the end zone from 1927-1932. 1974 was also the first year that field goal misses were returned to the original line of scrimmage. Before 1974, field goals were attempted with the knowledge that the worst that would happen is that it would be treated as a punt.

Now between the NFL and NCAA there are probably a few every weekend. How long was Adley R's at Sherwood?

I heard today that Maher has the most 60+-yard field goals in NFL history. It's all about technique. If his hips rotate through too early, or something else goes wrong, he'll pull or push the ball and 32 yards is far less forgiving than 18. I'd bet there have been more 60+ yard attempts in the past 5 years than there were in the 95 previous years of the NFL. I have found data for 63+ yard attempts. Longest attempted field goals (accurate to at least December 4, 2022): Sebastian Janikowski Raiders 76 yards September 28, 2008 Mark Moseley Redskins 74 yards November 25, 1979 Fred Steinfort Broncos 73 yards September 29, 1980
In the history of the NFL, there have been 73 documented attempts of 63+ yards. Since the beginning of the 2017 season, there have been 18 attempts of 63+ yards. The median attempt of those 73 is Josh Scobee's 63-yard attempt, which fell short at the end of the first half in September 13, 2009, game against Indianapolis. There were 36 attempts prior to September 13, 2009, and there have been 36 attempts since September 13, 2009
Your statement would be true, if you had said that there have been more 63+ yard attempts in the past 13 years than in the previous 90 years. (This is the NFL's 103rd year.)
Oregon State's Loris Hoskins "Sam" Baker lined up for a 65-yard field goal against the Baltimore Colts on December 23, 1956, but his kick was short, ending the game with a 19-17 Colts victory, ending the Redskins 1956 season.
Sam Baker's longest made field goal was 53 yards. Baker made one 53-yarder in a 41-10 loss to the Giants (the Eastern Division Champions) on Veterans Day 1962 and a second on December 8, 1963 (13 days after John F. Kennedy's funeral), in a 24-19 loss to the Steelers.
Sam Baker was one of the last great straight-toe kickers in the NFL. The final one was probably Mark Moseley, mentioned above, who played for the Redskins and then Browns until the Browns were eliminated in the 1987 AFC Championship Game after John Elway orchestrated "The Drive." Moseley was perfect on kicks in the game. The Browns won in double overtime in the Divisional Round against the Jets. Moseley tied the game with seven seconds left on a field goal and won it double-overtime. What is not usually told is that Moseley missed three field goals in the game, including missing a 27-yarder in the first overtime.

Now between the NFL and NCAA there are probably a few every weekend. How long was Adley R's at Sherwood? Adley Rutschman's field goal was a 63-yarder. There have only been eight made field goals of 63 yards or longer in NFL history. There have been 7 made field goals of 63 yards or longer in college history without a tee. (A 1" or 2" tee was permitted on field goals from 1948-1988 in college.) There have been 27 documented made field goals of 63 yards or longer in high school history. There was one 63-yard field goal in Arena Football. There has never been a field goal longer than 62 yards in the CFL without a tee. Rutschman had one of the 43-longest legitimately-made field goals in a game in football history. Dude's phenomenal.
