General observations on the Oregon game.Usually, I watch the replay 2 or 3 times before writing anything here. In this case I have not, so my observations are even more amateurish than usual. It’s not yet mid-December, so I’ll keep everything minimal.
1. In my view, this game was the Beaver’s best this year. By far.
2. Jelena is tougher, and more durable, than she was last year. Her defense remains ahead of her offense –but her rebounding is downright impressive.
3. AJ has provided no evidence that she can shoot consistently.
4. I was impressed with Martha’s general skill set and assertiveness. She made several good offensive moves. I think she caught Graves off-guard. Martha is the kind of player fairly easy to shut down when the opposing coach decides that’s what’s going to happen.
5. I think some of Bendu’s penetration drives were designed plays – not just random openings that she took advantage of. If I’m right, congrats to Rueck because that’s her best chance to score on this team - which is very measured in the freedom it gives penetrating guards.
6. I was totally surprised to see Lily in at crunch time. Either she is a better player than meets the eye (hopefully), or coach figured she was the best hope of nailing dagger 3s as time wore down…Rueck claims she is a good shooter, and maybe this was his way of testing out his own hunches on her prime time potential.
7. I don’t know what to make of Alex and her game –but thus far in 2022 she has played so-so at best.
8. Beers is a beast. No one in OSU recent memory has her
combined ability to: (a) get garbage points, (b) absorb contact in the paint, (c) grab offensive boards, (d) score in muscular traffic. Has any Frosh at OSU ever had her double-double games before Jan. 1?
9. No one on this team, other than Talia, has demonstrated that they can shoot with consistency.
10. If the Beavs play as well in Hawaii as they did last night in Eugene, things are definitely looking much better for ’22-‘23.
11. It now seems possible that the key ingredient in upward team performance this season might be Timea. Sight unseen.
GO BEAVS!!
