I’m glad that we got Brittney back to the US since the options came down to either her or no one. If you saw interviews with Trevor Reed, who was released from Russian jail back in April, you wouldn’t wish jail there on anyone. As for Paul Whelan, his family agrees this was the right move. Maybe he’s not the highest priority because of this

But anyone else traded for the Russian would be OK with it? Or is Griner the only one who you think should feel bad? I'm always happy when American citizens given ridiculous prison sentences following their conviction on trumped up charges at a show trial are released by war-mongering dictatorships. I’m going to avoid diving into the political cesspool on this one. I will only say that this little sports story is quite the Rorschach test. Oh and.. Merry Xmas everyone! So, was the sentence of nine years at hard labor in a Russian gulag appropriate, for a tiny amount of marijuana? Were the charges trumped up? Was the trial on the up-and-up and would it be considered fair in a democratic country? Is Russia not a dictatorship that with no provocation recently invaded, and has committed atrocities, to the citizens of a peaceful neighboring nation? I'll hang up and listen to your answers at home.

Honestly, if you were Griner how could you live with knowing that you got out of jail because they let this kind of guy back out on the street? If I was her I would say... please keep me in jail But anyone else traded for the Russian would be OK with it? Or is Griner the only one who you think should feel bad? I'm always happy when American citizens given ridiculous prison sentences following their conviction on trumped up charges at a show trial are released by war-mongering dictatorships. Were they "trumped up" charges? Was she unlawfully detained, as the US claims? Most countries allow some degree of search of people's luggage when they enter the country; I best Russia's law on the subject is particularly favorable to the government. So her luggage was searched, the vapes were found, she admitted she forgot to dispose of them before she went to Russia, and there was allegedly cannabis oil in the vapes. Possession of cannabis in Russia carries a max of 10 years and she got 9. It's appalling and, I might argue, a human rights violation. But Griner entered the country knowing that she was entering a dictatorship and she failed to take precautions. It's her fault that she got into a situation in which she faced the possibility of such a harsh sentence. Who the f doesn't know that things can go severely wrong if you break the law in a dictatorship? Arbitrary arrest and detention are key aspects of such a form of government. In fact, I bet someone advised her to obey the law in Russia when she first thought of going over there. Now she got the US to bail her out in exchange for a known international dealer in death. Some of Putin's most powerful friends sit atop organized crime. Why wouldn't Russia grab more Americans to get back their thugs that are in American custody? I'm glad Griner is out. It was bulls%#t that she was ever in. But the price was high, so so high.

The sentence was typical for the crime. The end.

Utter BS trading an arms dealer responsible for the death of thousands for a drug user... Arms don’t kill people, people kill people.

I can see about 3 posts in this thread that should get the 30 day banhammer.
To paraphrase some posts above:
“You’d be insane/stupid to make an obvious political post on a message board that expressly prohibits them.”

I ask for mercy because the posts didn't get too angry or personally insulting and I ask for mercy so we can be participants in the emerging discussions of the Las Vegas Bowl and our basketball seasons. And I personally apologize to the Board administration for violating Board policy.

The troll got exactly what he was hoping for. Yes, that’s one obvious offender, but they did respectfully ask to keep it only about basketball.

The troll got exactly what he was hoping for. I honestly thought we might discuss how the return of one of the best players in woman’s basketball history might impact the WNBA. I think it will have a very positive impact, provided she can return to her pre-detention form. As I said in my OP, “Good news for basketball fans”. Do I have thoughts about the non-sports elements of this news? Yes but I don’t think anyone wants to hear them and they’re irrelevant to this board.

Griner was lawfully imprisoned for something that she admitted that she did. The fact that Griner got out has everything to do with basketball, which is just depressing. Trading a terrorist for a basketball player, leaving other Americans behind? And two days after the election in Georgia? Incredibly weak, short-sighted, and stupid. But that seems to be a consistent theme the last 20 months. Oh well. There will be brighter days ahead..........There has to be, even if it is only by dumb luck. Paul Whelan was charged and convicted by russia during the prior administration. Since some think the prior guy was so strong and smart why didn't he get Whelan out? I apologize if some thought I crossed the line. Being smart and strong are two characteristics important in sports and life.
