I’m curious as to why Rueck yanked AJ from the starting lineup? Any speculation on that? She had a poor weekend-scoring 3 pts over two games, but it’s interesting that he moved Mannen in as a starter. Mannen didn’t bring much offensively either, going 3-15 over the weekend-but replacing a 6’1” player with a 5’5” one is an interesting move. Plus he gave her big minutes as well.
And a secondary question…did Gardiner start official practice with the team or does her injury predate that? If she hasn’t even practiced with the team then she’s been out over a month now. Rueck’s code of silence regarding even minor injuries on the team is curious. I wish the press would push him on that some.

I'm pretty sure I've seen video of Gardiner involved in early practices; this must be a more recent issue. We needed AJ in the lineup, but we also needed a "floor general". I wish we had a better option than Noelle, but we likely won't until next year. Bendu has the athleticism but probably still has to learn Rueck's offense. Rueck's desired offensive scheme requires spacing and ball-movement and this team has not been able to achieve that against good/athletic defensive teams. He either needs to make them proficient in running it or change his offense. He also needs to come up with a way to stop the mid-range jumpers that have plagued his teams for years.

Just an awful game. The players where so locked on trying to jam the ball into the post they didn't see the help. No one was making the easy pass to move the defense, just a very robotic offensive performance. Beers and TVO are above average players, and Bendu is solid, but we got nothing out of AJ or SA yesterday. They can't no-show this year. Martha and Noelle were solid. I would really like to see a line-up of TVO-Bendu-AJ-SA-Beers get some run, I think that's our best group right now. Everyone just needs to see the floor better.

I wouldn't mind seeing Jelena turning and popping from three many times a game. If she looks for inside outlets as the opponents' bigs charge her, an assist or three--she had three two games ago--will result. Will offer opponents a look they have not seen from our--sorry--pretty predictable, and often clogged, offense.
Then we gotta crash the boards if she's shooting, let the Biers wagon do her inside physical stuff with A.J. pogoing toward the boards.

Rueck mentioned in the O-Live article that the 3 former OSU players that are now part of the Duke program probably know the offense better than anybody on the current roster. I am sure Aleah was a big part of the scout for this game and was pretty active coaching during the game. She definitely knows the offense and what Rueck likes to do. They were clearly focused on limiting Talia as much as possible. With that said, the game was totally winnable. All we had to do was make some shots. The shooting was terrible. Combine that with the turnovers and it’s a loss every time. Reagan is a monster. She’s going to do big things very soon for this team. The future is bright when combined with the others on the roster. While I'm sure that's true about knowledge of our offense, offense should be adjusted to the personnel anyway, and this team is very different. I also just don't buy that excuse - it's not like Duke was preparing for weeks for this game - I'm sure they spent much more time prepping for UConn. For sure they disrupted the flow of the offense, and Scott mixed it up by changing the offense to have more flowing motion with the ball dribbled up high. Every team has been denying the passing lanes for several years now, so this wasn't a new problem with our offense. At the end of the day, an offense is supposed to enable putting the defense into bad positions and your scorers into good positions - all requiring reading what the defense is doing and reacting. We did none of that the whole game, they just looked baffled. That said, I suspect the team is super ticked off, and watching the game tape will be excruciating. I don't expect to see that performance repeated. As for Reagan, she's getting the Shaq-type calls currently. Players are flopping like crazy on any small bump or arm extension. It's so ridiculous. Meanwhile, she gets hacked like crazy and the whistles aren't blown because she doesn't get knocked around. The good news is she seems to hold her composure really well, much better than I am about it.

Watching this game I was stunned with the how the offense is performing. A few years ago they would have possessions where the ball would move around the perimeter bam-bam-bam without any hesitation or dribble, just looking for a shot or an opening. This team is constantly holding the ball, looking looking looking hoping for a player to be somewhere where they are not, threading needles out of desperation, and using time, dribbling to nowhere.

Duke continued to take the 10-12 foot jump shot in the middle of the key unguarded.

Reagan's fake foul situation reminded me of a video of a minor Italian soccer team practicing getting fouled. A player with the ball would create the illusion of a collision with another player and then go flying, landing on the ground and squirming in agony. Shown in slow motion, there was no actual contact. Evidently, that degree of skill is not needed in women's basketball to "create" a foul.

Whatever the lineup, we need a floor general, who pushes the ball, has court vision, and when needed can make a shot. I'd like to see Martha get an opportunity over the next few games running the point. Martha seemed to be the only one who made some decent reads/passes yesterday in her limited minutes. And would like to see all our freshmen get more minutes over the next 2 home games.
