I was thrilled to see Lily, AJ, and Noelle hit some 3s. Lily, because she's a Frosh and hit 3 of 4 like everyone was hoping. AJ, because she appears to be making a 2nd-year leap, and Noelle because of her joy when she does.
Hopefully the rest of the team gets warmed up to them also!

And how did UCLA, Stanford and the rest of the Pac-12 do today? Even WSU blew a team out by 30 , overs by 40 points. Sure some players were missing but this is Hawaii after all. It was a tough win and I know, take em when you can. It is early in the season for all teams. Just need to get players back to see if it translates into 30 or 40 point wins. that will be more telling I guess. Arizona St. is in a tight game w/ Northern Arizona.
Washington won by 13, but Utah Tech was pesky and just wouldn't go away.
Most of the other teams won handily though.

We barely beat an eight seed in the ‘23 tourney. Yay. So, by extension that would make us a 7 seed or thereabouts, if the season goes according to chalk. We weren't even in the tournament last year. Wouldn't that be significant progress? Do you think any of the other Pac-12 opponents tonight have any chance of making the NCAA tournament?

I was surprised we won, and was happy to see it. Hawaii has a good mix of veterans that have had a lot of success, and some young talent.
We rolled out there today with one player older than a sophomore, and that player hasn't played with anyone on this team before. We were missing our most experienced player, and our most talented incoming player. Literally only 4 players had ever played a counting game together, one being a former walk-on that hasn't played many meaning fun minutes. So I really wasn't expecting we'd beat a decent team, even at home. We barely did. We avoided a loss that while likely wouldn't have been an RPI killer, it could have hurt us later of sure. So yea, good to escape, and hopefully we figure a lot out quickly and this doesn't represent the level of play we'll be at in a few months.

" For that matter, Mannen has as many rebounds as Jelena and Beers combined."
Now, if there is a coach in America that can explain that - I'd love to hear it..... GO BEAVS!! Simple... it is the Mikayla Pivec factor, aka, HUSTLE. Jelena was watching shots hit the floor and or not going to the offensive boards on our shots. Oh, here we go ...

General thoughts-
In the past 4 years Mannen is the only player that the Beav's have had who can make good lob passes. Rueck loves recruiting tall bigs but he doesn't teach how to make decent lobs. Bizarre.
Hate bigs shooting the three. The whole "it opens up the inside" is garbage. You can get the same effect by just having the big on the outside and then if someone shoots the three they can at least try to get back for the rebound, while if they shoot there's no way they can be much of a factor.
Personally I'm surprised at how well the passing is going with the lack of experience the team has.
The three point defense has been a problem the last three years, but the team tightened it up rather quickly this game.
Talia had a problem dealing with the double teams routinely dropped on her. But if AJ and Lily can keep shooting like they did in this game it will go a long way toward making Talia's life easier.
They need to tighten up the defensive rebounding. The Beav's defense relies on forcing the other team to make a low % shot and then getting the rebound. If the other team keeps getting the offensive rebound then the Beav's defense falls apart.
I kept expecting this young team to panic, but they kept themselves together and gutted out the win. It was fun to watch.

I have to believe with Bendu and Timea available, this team has a great chance to improve substantially over last year, and from the start of the season to the end. It all starts on the defensive end,and Bendu is an athletic perimeter defender. Just like most schools, osu won't be a well oiled machine till much later relying on defense until the offense meshes together. We are a bit shy in terms of bigs,so Timea show give this team a boost when she is available. Nice win tonight...a lot to like and a lot to improve on.

Lots of great analysis by several folks, most recent, beaveragain, willtalk, believeinthebeavs and qbeaver, but many others too. I just wanted to say "thanks" for that. I have so much to learn, this helps.

Hansford has a lot more subtle aggressiveness and competitiveness that I did not expect based on her HS videos. She oozes confidence in front of the camera as well. Her upside seems really high with a combination of fire, length and deep range. I assumed she'd be a huge defensive liability out of the gates, but that hasn't been the case at all so far. Really excited to she how her season progresses already.

Mannen with a +21, by far the highest. That leads me to believe she’s doing a lot more than I’m able to see.

I expect Bendu and Timea to both wind up as starters eventually, if not pretty quickly. That's how I kind of saw the Hawaii game...a nice win against a team that will most likely win its conference once again and land in the NCAA tourney, done without two starters. As you said, Bendu will have a huge effect on the defense and probably helping the offense along as well. Not having Timea mere presence as a big hampered the Beavers. Agree 100 percent.

A couple comments on your comments: As for bigs shooting 3's, when Jelena is shooting 3's with this current team, there are no bigs around the basket to grab the rebound. If you have someone with size, or a Mik type with good anticipation, I wouldn't mind as much......or if your big taking the shots hit a good percentage, that would help too. I also thought the team passing was pretty good. Certainly, there were rough moments throughout the game, but I was a bit surprised at how well they could move the ball in parts of the game. This should only get better with experience and the addition of Bendu and Timea.
