Ryan was a starting pitcher at South Salem HS. He's strong and a power pitcher that was touching 94 this year. He has good command, is down working the lower part of the zone and the edges. Ryan locates both FB and SL - developing a lethal change up would be everything he needs to be a starter.
If the Beavs can get 5 or 6 innings anywhere near what he gave them in his 1 and 2 inning stints in '22, that rotation suddenly made a quantum jump in quality.
Geo Rivera and an improved and consistent Carpenter can bring 95-96 mph in from the pen and close it up in '23
Geo is a high-K, low-BB guy FWIW.

I wonder if he may get drafted this year and sign?

Maybe Mundt will be the closer next season if Brown becomes a weekend starter. Not sure about what his timeline is for returning from injury.

A consistent Carpenter ?…. Isn’t that oxymoron ?….. wish the kid well. But he has to be a lot better to get on the mound.

Freshmen often start out wildly inconsistent, especially pitchers who see inconsistent time in games. I remember telling everyone around who would listen about a freshman who was all over the place, getting pulled off the field by Adley, that he was our top pitching recruit in 2 years. It took him until he got consistent opportunities late in his freshman year for Kevin Abel to settle in to what he could be.

Might allow Frisch to close...?

I would like to think RD didn't bring Carpenter to OSU because he was inconsistent at CACC or because he anticipated he would be inconsistent at OSU.
The Phillies didn't draft him in the 18th round out of high school if they thought he was going to be inconsistent in pro ball.
He brought him here thinking he could become consistent. That work is unfinished, but pitchers have a way of flipping the switch, so there is hope for that. 95-97 doesn't come around every day, sometimes you have to work with that.

Has Frisch shared his 2023 plans publically with anyone?
Does anyone know if he'll be back next year?
We might hear someting following the MLB Draft.

Didn’t you say earlier in the season that they simplified his approach this year and brought him down to two pitches instead of 4? That seems like a big shift that might take some time. When he is in command he’s deadly.

Maybe Mundt will be the closer next season if Brown becomes a weekend starter. Not sure about what his timeline is for returning from injury. After Game 1 in Surprise I spotted Mundt in the stands above the bullpen. He told me he was planning on 2023 OSU pitching. Of course he's not going to reveal anything different than that to a stranger. If Mundt does return, and Lattery and/or Brown can be a reliable starter, and with the incoming - the flexibility for the staff would increase immensely. On that note, given Kmatz's robust use during the 2022 season (and the talk of a tired arm), I'm personally hoping he rests this summer - has anyone heard?

Tall guys often take longer to make their mechanics consistent. Dorman probably recruited Carpenter as a bit of a project with a big upside. I had a friend who played with Randy Johnson in the low minors with the Expo's organization. Besides saying he was an a$$, the friend said he was wildly inconsistent but his velocity and action on his pitches were unworldly.

Another summer time starter experiment: Justin Thorsteinson started (and pitched exactly 3.0 innings) on 6/23 for Bellingham, WCL. 4 hits, 3 BB, 3 SO, 0 ER.
He's scheduled to start again at Bend (6/29).
Thorsteinson only pitched 8 innings (9 appearances) for OSU in 2022, so his use at Bellingham (no doubt with Dorman input) is a different role.

It looks like at least 4 OSU pitchers (including incoming Nelson Kelso, Jesuit HS) are having summer WCL success, to date [season almost half over].
Ian Lawson (pitching tonight in Corvallis), Ryan Brown, Nelson Keljo and AJ Lattery are all hovering at about 1.0 WHIP to date in the WCL (a combined 25 innings, with 19 hits & 5 BB).
WCL is a far cry from PAC, but in terms of hitting success there are some useful comparisons. Bazzana had a good freshman year at bat for Beavs, but we know that he positively tore up the WCL. On the other hand: 2021 WCL (BA: Dernedde .129, Logan .307) >>> 2022 OSU (BA Dernedde .216, Logan .281).
Lattery (Bend) is the only Pitcher who has had longer outings. In 2 starts: 11 IP with 15 SO / 0 BB.
One more interesting summer note. Wilson Webber, who should be an important part of the 2023 Beavers may have 'grown up' at the plate. Last season, just out of High School, in 98 WCL ABs he went .214 / .275 / .347. This season, at half way point in the WCL (Bend, 50 AB) he's .360 / .475 / .600.
Only a little more two months until Fall Ball begins!
