I think it came down to the fact that we had no one else. Cooper was sick. Kmatz was clearly dealing with something. At the end of the day you can say it was crazy to want him out after the first. But a lot of us had seen this act from JP for the last few years. Not something i want to be right about. But.. lets hear his 2nd inning break down?.. Second inning JP retired the side facing 5 batters and throwing 21 pitches. Not sure what the 2nd inning breakdown would have to do with pulling him in the first? Was our coaching staff supposed to be able to see the future and then take the delorean back to the first inning to pull him? Saying we had no one to start when everyone on the staff had at least 4 days rest, and only CH was unavailable do to unknown illness is weird. Dude! What?? In the 2nd inning. Right after we put up a 4 spot. He went Single. Hit batter. Single. 2 runs scored. Tie game… Cooper Was sick. Kmatz has Dead arm. Who does that leave from our weekend rotation? NOONE. Clearly you werent watching the game so dont worry about responding. Just quietly admit to yourself that the people who wanted JP pulled after a rocky start, were in fact correct.

Hunter was sending signals around the 65 pitch mark. Pitchers send up flags once fatigue or loss of focus sets in. Pay attention to the body language. 1. Less animated between pitches. 2. Taking more time between pitches (change in rhythm) 3. Mechanics change - delivery speeds up or down or balance changes. 4. Signs of struggling or forcing/ fighting himself. 5. Watch the facial expression - the look of anguish, anger or irritation with balls/ strikes calls or, following a fielding error or giving up a home run ball..
Start there but pitch characteristics tell all 1. Loss of velo 2. Out of sync on breaking balls - premature release and hanging it 3. Loss of command - failure to locate your pitches. 4. Suddenly getting behind on the counts. 5. And what every pitching coach on the planet looks for - GETTING THE BALL UP IN THE ZONE.
Jaren was down for 65 pitches, with impressive movement. Start with 12 routine ground outs and with the one exception with DiChiara, mostly weak contact. Jaren was throwing fastballs and sliders down and on the corners and his change was filthy, sinking like a lead weight. At about 65, he begin getting up in the strike zone which for him can be a recipe for trouble. Coach Dorman may have spotted other "signals" and made the pre-emptive move to relieve him. A trip to the CWS was on the line, RD couldn't afford to be one hitter late. Sebby and Brown were fresh and warmed - easy decision.
Coachers cannot get caught up on what has transpired over ther previous innings. They are faced with the here and now. How effective is he right now? If there is doubt, it's a short hook before he makes the bad pitch that costs you the game. Of course score and inning are important. If the Beavs would have been up 10-2, heck yes. . . he gets one more batter.
Jaren was awesome until he wasn't. He gave the Beavers a great start and for 5 complete, he turned some heads. That game, in fact the last few games he has pitched, will get some juices flowing for 2023.

That doesn't change the fact that JP faced 5 AU batters in the first and threw 19 pitches and he faced 5 AU batters in the second and threw 21 pitches. Did you watch the game? I've sat in the stands before and heard fans talk endless coaching nonsense, just because you can get a million monkeys to beat on a million type writers for a million years and one types "To be or Not to be..." doesn't make that monkey Shakespeare. Congrats, you "knew" after 19 pitches and facing 5 batters in the first that JP should be pulled and that it compares directly with AU pulling their pitcher after 47 pitches, facing 9 batters, and recording 2 outs in the first. Outstanding work..."Shakespeare"

Probably should've kept Melton on the bench too, given that he was 3-18 in the regionals. Everyone around me could tell after he struck out looking in the first inning that he didn't have it.
