Gavin Turley has completed his four year prep baseball career that began at Wasatch HS in Midway, Utah and ended at Hamilton HS in Chandler, Arizona. Now we wait for the MLB Draft next month to learn his draft position and signability. His ranking as a high school draft prospect ranks anywhere from number 12 to number 34. For Beaver baseball fans, the dream of seeing Gavin Turley and Tyree Reed playing in the same OSU outfield is almost incomprehensible. The draft can end the dream but there may be some hope that Gavin finds college baseball a better value initially. Does he have a number in mind and will it be met? Usually it is, MLB clubs are not fond of losing early round draft picks.
Turley and his Hamiton Huskies team have had a fantastic season. They finished the year 29-4, and won the Arizona state 6A championship with an 11-1 victory over rival Chandler HS. Two of the four Hamiton losses were to out of state nationally ranked teams, Reno, NV HS and Huntington Beach, CA HS. Hamilton is ranked 8th nationally in both the Rawlings Perfect Game and Baseball America prep polls.
Gavin has been named first team all state by the Arizona Republic and the Arizona Baseball Coaches Associan. He is a prep All American with Max Preps and one of ten candidates for their National Player of the Year Award Gavin had an outstanding season with Hamilton HS. His stats for 2022 were:
Played in 32 of 33 games. Started all 32. He made 132 plate apperances with 32 hits in 99 official ABs. he scored 37 runs, and had 31 RBI, He hit 8 doubles and 15 home runs. He had 28 BB, 5 HBP and 34Ks. His slash was .323/ .492/ .858 with OPS of 1,351.
The scouting reports on Gavin are glowing. His tools are exceptional beginning with a 6.29 clocking in the 60 and his ability to hit a baseball 440'. The only concern Scouts have, and it is an important one, is the "hit" tool and the high % of strikeouts. That will be corrected but where? In Class A ball somewhere in Smalltown America, or in the cages at Goss Stadium under the watchful eye of Coaches Gipson and Canham.

Come to OSU and learn how to not strike out Gavin! 2 years and go top 20 in the draft?

This one is recent.
"Turley is the top-ranked player in the state of Arizona, and the tools are as loud as anybody’s nationally in the class. Aggressive swings all game, loudest result was a double off the wall in the left field corner. Barreled one to the right center field warning track in another at-bat. The bat speed really stands out. Showed off the plus arm strength in pregame. Ran a 6.29 sixty at PG National Showcase and got plus run times home-to-first in this look. The Oregon State commit checks all the boxes"

Question. I don’t really understand the dynamics between the mlb and college.
Why do mlb clubs want 17-19 year old kids when they can pick them up 2 years later better trained, more mature and proven?

Seems like alot of risk when you can get a free test drive. Probably be a different situation if there was salary caps.

There are salary cap(s) in terms of 4 tiers if luxury tax levels. Crazy expensive and most teams can't afford to go over them. And, getting a player in your organization, being trained by your professional trainers and coaches is much different than college ball. Plus if a HS kid goes to a 4-year it's a 3 year wait, or age 21.

He's finished? We may be finished!- some big MLB decision makers are showing up to see him. Stuff like this isn't helping our cause!
"Turley finished off an outstanding season with a strong performance in the State Championship, going 2-for-3 with a home run and double. The deep 400 foot shot to left field was Turley’s 15th home run on the year, setting a single-season 6A state record. The Oregon State commit ended the year hitting .317/.489/.842 to go along with 14 stolen bases. Game changing power generated by lightning fast bat speed showed up regularly throughout the season with a remarkable 72% of hits going for extra bases. Quality speed adds another dynamic tool that can impact games. Turley is a threat to steal once on base and tends to do so often. The speed/power combination gives Turley one of the more intriguing offensive profiles in this year’s prep class. There are some swing and miss concerns within the profile, but a sound approach capable of drawing frequent walks helps combat those concerns. Turley has the potential to hear his name called in the first round come draft time and turn head quickly at the next level if everything clicks."

Will be completely dependent on what number the guy wants. He has the goods to bet on himself either way.

"Signability" is everything.
If he is selected in the first 40-50 slots in the draft, it will indicate a club's confidence they can sign him. They won't waste an early pick on a player they know will be difficult to sign.
Usually that it is established prior to the draft.

Can teams reach out to the players and ask them what it would take? Do these high school kids have agents?

Today, June 9th . . . with their ear to the ground and their scouting information in hand, Baseball America published their Top-300 ranking for the 2022 MLB draft.
Gavin Turley is predicted to be the 21st pick in the 3rd round at #87.
The Music Man's dream is alive - An incredible freshman outfield of Gavin Turley, Tyree Reed and Dallas Macias.
Mind boggling, I say!

Definitely nice money but if he’s confident he may bet on himself to be a 1st rounder at 21 years old.
