As the country music song goes, "there are 3 sides to every story, my side, your side, and the cold hard truth"
We might not ever get to the cold, hard truth, so here is my side of the story, all observations from a Beaver alum who started following MBB in Fall 1987 (GP-I's sophomore season) and still hasn't learned how to completely disengage (though I am getting closer after last season, Lord knows).
- Tinkle appears to be a good family man
- WT appears to care about his players (at least from observations I can make of the bench at game time)
- the MBB players appear to have a reasonable relationship with their HC
- I have yet to discern an offensive game plan in the WT era
- Many of our good offensive players have presented defensive liabilities
- Some of the best recent Beaver players have shared last names with the coaching staff
- Having "my three sons" led to speculation around favoritism and lack of accountability in regards to those 3 players
- Count me in the camp that leans towards "the coaches kids were on a longer leash" - with NO statistical proof, mind you
- I believe we have seen WT ceiling, but that is better than any coach not named Miller (regular season) and/or Gill/Valenti (tourney)
- Unfortunately we also have seen WT's floor, and you have to go back to the Jay John Jay/Kevin crap show to find similar records
- while there may be some truth to the accusations levelled against WT, I also believe exaggeration and emotion could be a factor - and all of that is a Scott Barnes problem
- I actually think Tinkle's coaching had less to do with our recent tourney run than "peaking at the right time/getting hot/getting lucky"
- Before you beat me up about that prior point, I think outside of "dominant" schools (Kansas/Duke/Kentucky/...) most tourney success stories are "peaking at the right time/getting hot/getting lucky"
- Just like most schools in that position, we rewarded our coach with an extension, who then unfortunately laid an egg
- We will have to ride out this string, both because of $$$, but also the recent final-8 finish, plus the dramatic changes (asst. coach firings), and optics required to attract a "better" coach should we come to that
- Scott Barnes could be as much the problem as WT, but that is another string we seem to have to ride out
- Ergo, WT is the coach for some years yet, regardless of what Jarod's Mom says.
Unfortunately, I also believe we are not going to be much better (since I don't think WT's coaching has been *the* predominant factor in our winning, when we have been winning), and I need to continue to tune in casually until the next "blind squirrel finds a nut" and we find ourselves back in the tournament with the ability to win a game or two. I just hope I don't have to wait decades for that to happen.
I wish Jarod and his family well. He gets to change his situation and move on to Nevada. I don't get to change my situation - I am still a Beaver fan, and while I don't like a lot of what I have seen most years in MBB, I really liked the tail end of the season 2 years ago, and have to hope we have a couple more of those in us before *my* final buzzer - regardless of who is coaching and what the names on the back of the jerseys are......and there are no quick fixes for us, even if we were to remove WT right now (which is likely not going to happen for 2+ more seasons).
Go Beavers!
