Interesting concept. I’m not a pitching guru or anything but usually you want a heavy strike out guy at closer. Pfennigs is a location first pitch to contact guy if I’m not mistaken. He can go the distance and generates lots of defendable in field contact (and double plays) but not really the guy who knocks 3 down in a row with nasty strike outs. Well, the object is to get outs. Throwing strikes with multiple pitches/speeds and using a very solid defense is a good thing. Dan Quisenberry, Doug Jones, Rollie Fingers weren't strike out types, but seemed to do just fine. There are others, but the big strike out guy is intimidating. Ferrer is the best candidate to start in my opinion. Pfennings will be on a very limited pitch count for a few series. Wait does Ferrer have an intimidating fast ball? He looks low 90s to me, he mostly gets the job done with impressive movement in his change ups and really solid location. He gets guys out by pitching in the zone and making guys miss. Pfennigs pitches edge and around the zone and gets guys to chase bad hitters pitches so he can get lots of easy pop ups and grounders Ferrer pitches to strike out and Pfennigs pitches to contact. Idk anyone who wants the closer pitching to contact as it’s riskier for both hits and free bases in a critical part of the game. You don’t send in the closer when the game is comfortable. Other guy I’d like to see as closer is Lattery and his best pitch is that weird ass slider. I don’t think his fastball is anything crazy either.

Is there hesitation? Why do you think so? I'm not sure there is or why. But, he's shown he can go 5, and has started previously, but still hasn't gotten a start. I thought for sure he'd get a look by now when two guys went down. So I think he’s set up perfectly to get the game ball on Sunday, provided that’s how Dorman wants to use him. I think they’ve brought him along nicely and might be ready to see what he can do. However, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him brought in for relief in a close Friday or Saturday game. He’s shown dependability, and sometimes relief in those games is more important than starting a Sunday game. I guess we’ll see what develops this weekend.
