With the exodus at Catcher (Claunch to the portal), as well as Hamilton and Pruitt not returning....it left the Beavs with Gavin Logan and two touted Freshmen at Catcher.
Some on this board have expressed the opinion that either Weber or Smith would get a nod at Catcher...or at least they'd get the start once the season moves into April/May.
Gavin Logan will not only be the starting catcher on Feb. 18, 2022, but he will be behind the plate for 85% or more of the games this season. Look for his offense to be an important piece in the overall run scoring scenario. The guy is a gamer (he's Canadian for goodness sakes!).

I am glad he is a gamer but I really want to see production from the plate more than behind it. Score runs with your bat so you aren't in the position that you have to throw out every baserunner that gets aboard.

T.J. Wheeler has caught before and Catcher has been listed as a secordary position for him at Sac City and Yavapai. Can't attest to his skill level but he has played the position.
Weber and Smith have played about 250 games each over the past 4 or 5 years against the best comp in the country. Both have played on elite summer travel teams since they were 7th graders. They are capable.

I confess that my characterization re: Gavin Logan was an attempt to stir up some pre-season conversation. Claunch caught with such regularity last season that it's hard to judge where the Catcher position stands for 2022. But consider this: In an admittedly small 2021 sample (22 ABs), Gavin Logan hit .318 with a .920 OPS. Three candidates for Catcher (all except Wheeler) played in the same summer league just 6-8 months ago (WCL): Smith - 160 AB .225 BA 43 SO 3 BB .601 OPS Weber - 98 AB .214 BA 33 SO 9 BB .622 OPS Logan - 88 AB .301 BA 24 SO 23 BB . 889 OPS Again, a fairly small sample. And the two incoming freshman were adjusting to college pitching, whereas Logan (who just turned 22) has been playing college baseball at various levels since the 2019 season (including 2020 at LBCC). It will be fun to watch what unfolds at the Catcher position. Will Gavin Logan have a break-out season? Will either Weber or Smith develop quickly enough to establish themselves in the starting lineup? Less than 2 weeks away now !!!

Not only did the two youngsters struggle in the summer. They didn't face Pac12 quality starters in that struggle. Who ever breaks thru as the starter, I believe it's Logan, they'll get the lion's share of play depending on the handling of the staff. To me, unless one just goes off unexpectedly, catcher is the weak link offensively. Thus that position must be one of the best defenders at their position and have command of the staff/defensive. A true tough guy leader type who comes thru at the plate in a couple huge spots. Anyway... looking forward to seeing what pans out with this team in several areas.

"didn't face Pac12 quality starters" True Enough. Summer ball is a wild card. Maybe a player is working a new approach. Maybe a player is put-off by a wood bat. Maybe a player is taking a summer 'vacation'. That's why I'm only mildly concerned that in the same league (WCL) that Logan hit .301 and Fuchs hit .311 and Bazzana hit .429, that Dernedde (in 85 plate appearances) only hit .129 (8 hits / 32 SO and 21 BB).

With the dumpster fire the men’s hoops team is and the women’s hoops having their struggles albeit nothing close to the men’s team.....I’m hoping that the baseball team can reinvigorate us Beav fans

Bazzana Meckler Melton Forrester Wheeler Dukart logan Boyd Gretler Hjerpe Have to admit that I'm anxious to see Bazzana play after all the talk. But even without him, that lineup (if all stay healthy) is going to be formidable.

With the way Dernedde ended last season in Fort Worth, he's got to be in the mix somewhere. Same with Fuchs. A lot of incoming talent as well that will likely earn some playing time. Factor in the impact of the portal opportunity for Freshmen who don't feel like they got a fair shot and it gets very challenging to pencil in a lineup for Mitch on a day to day basis. I suspect we will see some lineups heavily influenced by who the starting pitcher on the other team is.
