Took a quick look around the box scores in the Pac-12 this week. I didn't check Utah or Colorado, but I'm going to predict Talia gets her first Pac-12 Player of the Week this week. Cameron Brink probably is her closet competition, and if Talia doesn't get it, we can blame it on the loss Wednesday loss to Washington State and Talia's 10 point performance.

I think Talia edged out Brink too. A couple variables that could swing it to Brink: 1) The loss and generally crummy game at WSU and 2) Brink having a very strong game against a top-10 team on ESPN.
Those ESPN games always seem to carry a little extra weight. When Aleah was National Player of the Week (twice), both times it was after a big win on ESPN.
I wouldn’t be shocked if it was Brink, but I think (hope) Talia gets it.

Whether Talia gets it or not, it looks to me after these 2 games like she's decided to put this team on her back, and we've desperately needed someone to step up and do that. I think the coaching staff will encourage it, and her teammates will welcome and applaud it.
Her play Friday and today makes me feel a whole bunch more optimistic than I had been.

Looks like they gave it to Brink. I'm surprised but not totally. Brink had a good weekend, but I would classify Talia's as better. They're wrong. I'm right> Oh, well.

I think she gets it without the WSU game this week. Her only have 10 points and no assists against the Cougs most likely swung it to Brinks favor.

Just keep doing whatever you need to do to grow the win column . If they try to focus on Talia, she will just hit one of the cutters near the hoop, or hit one of the other three shooters ( Taya, Greta, AJ ). The weapons are getting loaded and I love the more active offense and the speed on transition baskets, AND. cannot forget about the offensive rebounds from Jelena, Kennedy and Taya ). Go Beavers !

OSU's commitment to push the ball after a defensive rebound or take-away, and have all the "runners" filling the lanes gives TvO options to pass or take it to the rim. It will be interesting to see if we can do the same vs Arizona. I think we can vs ASU, but not so sure about having the same results vs AZ.

That wonderful transition game was made possible by the rebounder (often FRESHMAN Mitrovic) quickly getting the ball to Point Guard (FRESHMAN) Talia Von Oelhoffen - who then advanced the ball 15-20 feet before using her super-quick court vision to find a teammate cutting to the basket.
It makes me wonder two things:
a.) Did Rueck see the beauty of what happened Sunday (I'll bet he did) - and make it a staple of the Beaver offense? With players like Ellie/AJ/Taya it sure could be.
b.) Why the heck is the team in critical need of a 'point guard' in the PORTAL, prior to the 2022-23 season (as is often mentioned on this board)?
Talia is already here!
Bring in a transfer Point Guard and what does that do to team chemistry, which is at last finding a focus with Talia running the show?
Beavs have done well under Rueck when their "point guard" is more of a 'combo' (Aleah and Syd come to mind...
...and even Mik when she had to fill-in at point).
The only proto-typical point that the Beavs have had during their recent successful years was Destiny Slocum.

The only proto-typical point that the Beavs have had during their recent successful years was Destiny Slocum. To answer your questions: a) If you watched the post-game presser you should know that Rueck has been working towards this point… where the game will speed up (when it’s there) and slow down (when it’s not) appropriately. He chose to focus on the half-court game and get that right before bringing in the fast break game. b) People (including me) have commented that we need to add a point guard, but that (at least for me) was dependent upon Talia not improving. Until these last two games she created a great amount of concern with her play. After the last two games, the probability that she will meet our needs is looking much higher, though we do need to see this more consistently with continued improvement. That said, we DO need another point guard with great skills as a backup (or primary if she can prove herself more capable than Talia).

If Talia had a strong running mate, we would not have heard as many complaints about her as we've had. Talia was in a bit of a slump (especially shooting percentage) the first half of the year, but this was compounded by the fact that the Beavs did not have a threat at the 2, or really the 3 to provide relief for Talia. People that love Syd as much as I did, have forgotten that she had 390 career TO's. Talia's freshman numbers are not that out of line with Syd's freshman campign. Last season this board was buzzing about Talia's great passing, but you have to have teammates who play together, and know what Talia is capable of doing. We're getting there. Don't get me wrong though, this team will need another good ballhandling 1 or 2 next year to complement Talia. Greta may grow into that, but getting someone from the transfer portal would be ideal. It was fun to listen to SR in the presser when he spoke about recruiting Talia and how amazed he was with her passing. Despite my confidence in her abilities in the long run, I still expect she will have some struggles this season as she will be the player that opposing team concentrates on.

Don't forget that Syd had her "swish sister" Jaime on the one wing with her and for two years Ali on the other side. I'm hoping that Greta or AJ will step up to fill at least one of them.

Historically, we have always had a point guard who could score the ball - Sid, Mik (when needed to play point), Destiny, and Aleah. Tea isn't that, averaging 3.8 points per game prior to Sunday. Talia is now establishing herself as an OSU point guard who can, and will, score the ball, and is a factor from 3. That's critical for Scott's offense, I think. Talia is going to be our starting point guard for the next 3 years.
Starting this Friday, I'd like to see Scott start Talia at point and AJ at the 2. Bring Tea off the bench. Ellie has become a really good '6th man', and I'd bring her off the bench while simultaneously moving Greta from 3 to 2. Greta's shooting about 43% from 3. Let her play some guard and she if she can't take a few more of them. Prior to Sunday, she was 20/47 on them, while Emily was 6/33 and Tea 4/16. AJ was 12/31 (38.7%) on them. With Kennedy playing the post, she's not going to be putting up too many of them.
Scott's teams live and die by the 3. Those who have demonstrated an ability to make them are Talia, AJ, and Greta (and Taya up front), not Emily and Tea. Put them in a position to do so.
One other thing: Talia's range has been just incredible of late. The defense can't sag off her from anywhere.

Now I like all the optimism about Talia but we haven’t won a top three in the league game yet. That also goes for Mitrovic. Neither have faced the difficulty of the bigs we will face with ducks and Stanford. This will be a real test.

Mitrovic’s season last year ended with her getting pushed around by Boston, and she clearly didn’t like how that went. Talia’s season also ended the same way with her getting schooled by S. Carolina’s guards. They haven’t seen the likes this season, but they spent the off-season remembering an opponent that is arguably better than what they will face coming up..

We are going to learn a lot about Talia (and the rest) over the next 5 games. Even ASU on the road Friday will be a significant challenge. She is going to be the pg and the face of the program for as long as she is here, even thru the struggles and growth. She should have the ball in her hands as much as possible. I also agree with an earlier post regarding the other guards. It’s time to see what we have in AJ and Greta. Let the three of them grow and struggle together. Move Tea to the bench and spot minutes. This team is not really going anywhere this season. If they make the tournament it will be one win at the most. Let’s go with the all freshman backcourt and let Talia run the show.
