PG play is super important. And SR's offense is no different. But, I believe SR wants a more "ball control/shooter" vs a free wheeling penetrator. He wants controlled action and set plays unless in transition. Many of the 4/5* types are more up and down, and play at their own pace. A player like Destiny was super effective and b exciting at times, but she appeared to frustrate SR too. IMHO just any old 5* PG is not a fit his style/preference?! We need a PG (height not as critical) who doesn't turn over the ball, makes good decisions--passing/penetrating, can score when we need them to score, and plays solid defense. Not much to ask . Aleah's senior year spoiled us, and Syd spoiled us as well. I think Aleah's senior year is the best PG play we have seen in a decade.

I think that's a bit of a recency bias - I really disliked Aleah's PG play for more than half of the last season. By late in the season, peaking in the first tourney game where she was unbelievably good, she had really nailed it. But if it wasn't for the 2nd half of last year, I would recall her as a PG that took the air out of the ball. Aleah shot over 50% from deep last year as well, and was a volume shooter at that. If we need that level of play at the PG position to be successful, we're in trouble. Syd was also a similarly rare type of deep threat with size and the ability to penetrate and pass; I really hope SR knows how to win without requiring that level of PG play.

I just want our starting center back.

…….is offensive……. I figured I’d throw this in following all the other, “ whatsamatter “ posts. They play like kids “afraid to make a mistake, or they’ll get the hook.” The talent is there, but so is the tentativeness…. That’s what I see. Robotic and tight. They don’t appear to be having ahelluvalot of fun. Just an opinion (like all the others).

I just want our starting center back. That’s not happening this season. Nobody is saying this word out loud, but it’s a redshirt.

They wouldn't say that out loud because it's extremely unlikely that would happen unless the NCAA changes it's rules. She's played too many games for a medical wavier redshirt unless the Beavs play 31 games this season. Since she was already granted a 5th year because of Covid, I'm doubtful she would want to stick around for 6, but who knows. Part of me wanted to stay in college a few extra years.

You could be right. Let’s see how it plays out. But I bet we don’t see her on the court again this season.

All this talk of point guard play…just a reminder that Mik played point for the last elite 8 team. Just saying..

This is a really great thread. I tip my hat to the basketball smarts in this group… you folks understand the game better than me. I am in the camp of loving prototypical point guard play. But I agree with others that that may not be in the cards and may not be what Scott is looking for. He may be looking for Talia to develop into something resembling Sidney. I don’t know. It’s a good thing she is only a freshman. Lots of time for her and I bet, regardless of how her role evolves, we will be saying ’how the hell do we replace her?’ when she leaves.
If Jones is out for the year, even as they hopefully catch up in the games played column, this team will do well to finish in the middle of the Pac. Which will hopefully be accompanied by a LOT of development. - Brown and Mitrovic grow their offensive games in the absence of Jones - All three freshmen guards grow a LOT

I probably am mean to share my anxiety here, but I am worried we don’t see her back at all - at least at a high level. Shoulder issues are a type of thing that modern science hasn’t yet mastered. I thought she’d make a major jump her sophomore year based on her drive and talent level, and my belief is that didn’t happen due to her shoulder not being right - and hasn’t been pretty much throughout. I really hope I’m wrong, but bracing myself for this possibility.

Well, it could be an issue with any muscle, bone, ligament, or joint in Taylor's body. It could be healed and she's playing tonight. or maybe next week, or maybe next November. We don't know, and OSU is obviously not going to tell us. I personally think that's ridiculous, but that's not going to change anything.
So I just accept that she's not playing and assume she won't be in the future either. That way, I can be pleasantly surprised if she ever suits up again, just as I would if Andrea did.

Syd, has been my all time favorite wbb player, but she had almost 400 To's in her career. She had two seasons with over 100 TO's. Her TO's her freshman season, and Talia's are very similar, and I would argue Syd had better surrounding players to help prevent TO's.

TvO is improving with her Turnovers. Last night her turnovers were mostly unforced (decision making turnovers). Not seeing as much getting double teamed and trapped as TvO was early in the season. TvO has pretty impressive handles as she demonstrated last night. I do hope OSU recruits another capable ball handler next season via the portal, and someone with more than 1 year of eligibility. I am still very glad we have Tea Adams this season--she is a capable ball handler.

Our offense will certainly be tested by UCLA tomorrow. Do not be fooled by how many players suit up or that they forfeited a game. They will pressure our ball handlers and, I would say, probably create more turnovers than we had last night.
