For those of us who follow baseball recruiting, it is interesting the number of recent commits for 2016. There have been some 17-18 verbals as well, but the late additions for 2016 are interesting. It may be an absolutely brutal Fall practice situation to see who makes the roster or there are other defections from the current roster (expected anyway, but the numbers are interesting).

Recently, Brandon Eisert, Cade Warren, and Alex McGarry have committed. On second look, McGarry is a 2016 HS grad, but has committed to play after his freshman year at a JC. Eisert had pretty decent stats, and I will assume he is a walk-on.
Cade Warren may be a scholarship guy or a walk-on. Montana does not have high school baseball so he didn't get much exposure. Needs bulk. Brother is the ducker pitcher.
Add the 11 signees with the new verbals as well as guys like Pene, Casey, JZ's son, Ferrario, and Garnett who have stated they are Oregon State bound and Fall ball gets into serious competition. Some may not show, but there are lots of players for few(apparently to outsiders) open spots.

As of now all it does is make us younger not better!
Unless we have several guys step up beyond what they have ever done in an OSU uniform so far... offensively and defensively... AND we get at least (3) pitchers that do the same... we are looking at a long season. There are a couple that could pleasantly surprise. But, there is tons of improvement that needs to happen before February. We were not performing at a high level and LOST very key pieces and leadership.

If Casey keeps kids, I bet he thinks it will make his team better. Define what a long season is. I'm not saying you are wrong...I'm just not buying what you are selling.(yet). I see a lot of talent comimg back. I do think we need to find an arm or two...and a catcher. I guess it feels like you are painting the team with a lot broader negative brush than I would.

Besides Morrison and Ice, who did we lose of significance? [Eckert graduated] Neither Hamilton or Pomeroy did much. King didn't get drafted. True, Drew is probably gone for next year. But, Tweedt and Martinek should be healed completely. So where is the step down?

I didn't imply in any way, shape, or form as to the positives or negatives of the new additions. My only point was that there is going to be brutal competition for what is apparently few open roster slots.

You can't afford to lose much of any significance... and those three were hugely important... when you're a struggling team on and off (if you take players comments and interpret them as some did) the field and are, by and large, depending on unproven or underperforming pitchers. Its really not a negative "brush" of this team. For the upcoming season to be more than just optimistically hopeful, last season had to show more growth and not have the set back of big time injuries, with knowledge we were also going to lose some talent. Is there talent coming in? I'm sure there is. Have they ever competed versus D1 talent up and down a lineup? Nope. Have they gone thru the rigors of college academics/transitions, Fall ball, conditioning, and month or more longer season with double the games? Nope. Could some young men shine? Yep. But, in our case from where were left off and who we lost, it's going to take more guys than can be reasonably expected. Personally I was hoping for a couple late JC or D1 transfer arms with experience.

The guy I think we will be upset we let get away is Ronnie Rust. Heck of a catcher. Heck of an offensive stick. Heck of a competitor. Heck of a kid. If his shoulder holds up, he is one that we will wish we would have kept and he could become a real thorn in our side for the next 3 years.

Perhaps just getting back in shape. James Andrews now recommends a recovery/rehab period of 15-18 months. So it's quite possible that he will improve; though it's just as possible that he won't. Anything on Tweedt?

Really concerned about Martinek, looked horrible when he did get in this year and he just doesn't seem to have anything going for him. He has the physical presence to be a great pitcher, but it's looking very dim for him ever getting back to being a plus pitcher again. It happens, just didn't want it to happen to the Beavs again. Really hope it changes, we need him badly, but it is NOT looking like it will.

I will tell you from the outside looking in and seeing him pitch all thru HS... Martinek was always physically superior to those around him growing up. He simply was better and never worked hard to improve. From early on his throwing mechanics we very poor, but since he could throw it past people he was never willing to change and his coaches never really made him. His breaking ball mechanics were the worst part and he really put undue strain on his elbow. He was surgery waiting to happen.
The issue, kids who have been hard workers their entire life know how to battle thru and recover much better. Martinek can change, but his issue has always been "coachability" and work ethic. He should be MUCH better than he has shown. But, there is nothing more common that wasted talent and abilities.
He is basically at ground zero... and really should have stuck around and worked on conditioning, basic mechanical reboot, and getting some live innings in where he could versus Knight players on their off days etc. He is doing himself no good in Alaska physically or mentally right now.
